Hey all! I'm new here, looking for a support group! I'm 5 months into a required 6 month medically supervised weight loss period for gastric sleeve. Currently 20 years old, barely a senior in college...

Does anyone have experience with surgery in college? I'm kind of scared that I'll have complications and have to put school on the back burner...

Also, any advice for people with tattoos? I'm not sure how tattoos are affected by weight loss, like are they going to migrate?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I am 24 and in college! I had surgery smack dab in the middle of the semester and only took a week off from work and school to heal. I let all my teachers know in advance that I was having this surgery sometime in the semester and finally told them the date and they were cool with it. I do not stay in dorms because I am in a community college, so I don't have the temptation of the cafeteria food around me just temptation at work because they don't always eat all that well. There are always the fear with any surgery that something might go wrong. Where in Michigan are you from? I am from Lansing and went through Sparrow Weight Management.

I live in East Lansing! But I'll be going through Beaumont weight control center because I'm from the east side of the state(Macomb)... I also live off campus at MSU, but I work in the cafeteria as a cook, which is sometimes hard for me.

Oh I bet, that's cool you live in East Lansing. I work in East Lansing but not at MSU, my boyfriend works at MSU though. I have heard of the Beaumont Weight Control Center before, known many people who have went through there and heard wonderful news about them. I am from this area so it was easier for me just to go through Sparrow. It's neat to hear about the different health systems here in Michigan implementing weight centers for bariatric surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
