Bypass on june 4th 2014 one week post op

Recommended Posts

Hi all I am relatively new here and I've got quite a few questions!

My story

I've been heavy all my life and I've had diabetes and high blood pressure for over 5 years now so I decided bypass surgery was my only option since nothing else seemed to work.

I'm 25 years old , pre-surgery weight 258 and I'm one week post op. I'm not extremely hungry but I have been having serious cravings for food that I generally never eat? Has anyone else had these cravings? I'm just so worried that ill eat things again that are not healthy craving hot dogs and burgers :-( idk but after having this surgery I am realizing the relationship that I have with food is so unhealthy... Maybe I haven't had a chance to grieve the loss of food yet... I just can't stand these cravings..,

Also I've still got alot of pain in my left side ... Every time I move to sit or stand its like someone is punching me in the kidneys??? Is this normal?

Any and all advice is helpful!!

Elizabeth

Everything your feeling is completely normal. Right now you should be concentrating on getting your liquids and walking. Your tummy is still swollen, that's the pain your feeling on the left side. It does go away, give it time. As for feeling hungry, you shouldn't feel that way now. Most "hunger" is in your head now, your tummy doesn't know what hungry is. Remember that if you eat foods that are sugary or fatty you'll most likely get sick, so keep reminding yourself of that. Also, it's way to soon for you to even consider solids, you'll definitely make yourself sick. Use this time to try to wrap your head around your new life without food. I eat on a schedule no because I'm rarely "hungry", I eat because I have to and I only eat what's in plan and good for me. At 3 months I can barely get in 3/4 of a cup of food so I need to make sure what I eat is good stuff. When I "think" I'm hungry I drink fluids, more times then not that's what my body wants. If that doesn't work, I go for a little walk or try to find something to keep myself busy. You need to retrain your brain to not focus on food so much, that's what got you to this point. The surgery works, but you need to be in control, you can't turn your back on it or let anything slide. Stay strong, drink your fluids, get up and moving......you're going to be amazed at what your body will do for you. Best wishes.

This is all new for you.

I agree that this is your head talking and not your new pouch.

Stick with everything your surgeon and nutritionist have mapped out for you for your Protein and Water intake. It's very important for the healing process.

The pain you're feeling is most likely gas and walking will help relieve it. You could also ask your surgeon if you can take Gas X strips to relieve the gas.

Your pouch can't handle the foods that are on your mind. At a later date a few months from now you probably could tolerate a burger but not from a fast food place. Hot dogs are very hard to digest and are gassy.

Please take it one stage at a time and you'll be fine.

Once again following all the directions the surgeon and nutritionist have given you and you'll be fine.

Good luck on your road to a healthier you.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
