My surgery is next Monday (June 16th). I am starting to get nervous and am obsessing about making sure I am prepared. Does anyone have any advice for me?

My surgery is the 20th of June! I keep reminding myself this is a long term goal with lots of ups and downs. Relax, we are on our way! SOON! How is your pre-op diet going? I am finding it to be a bit of a challenge but I am following it.

My diet is going great. It's been a lot easier for me than I thought, but still not easy. I have managed to stay true to it though. I just have to last another 5 days!

My advice: take a deep breath

Now take another deep breath

Before you know it surgery will be over and you will be post op!!!

First and foremost - breathe! :)

Follow your doctor's pre-op diet.

Pack a bag with your phone/tablet, charger, toothbrush, toothpaste, basic toiletries, clean underwear, comfortable slippers or shoes (you'll be doing a lot of walking in the hospital) reading material and lip balm. I also packed my own pajamas because I absolutely despise hospital gowns. Pack loose, soft clothing to wear home from the hospital.

Go shopping for all of the liquid/sublingual Vitamins and supplements that your surgeon has ordered. Stock up on Protein Drinks, broth, sf Jello, cream Soups, popsicles - basically everything you will be allowed to eat in the first couple of weeks. Make sure you have a pill crusher or have your pharmacy give you liquid versions of your Rx medications, if available.

If you are the primary cook in your household, make ahead a few casseroles or meals that can be frozen for your family to just heat and eat for that first week or so.

Good luck; keep us posted on your progress. :)

Thank you so much! You have made a few really good points that I did not think of. Slippers! How could I not have thought of that! Haha.

I will keep everyone posted. So far I'm down like 20 lbs. So it's a good start before surgery :)

One thing I really used right after surgery was sippy cups - little kid cups. I would put my Water in it and sip away. It was smaller size and when you are done with one you feel like you accomplished something. After surgery it will be about small steps. You have to get in 64oz daily or 8 cups. I took it one sippy cup at a time.

I just got home today from my surgery on Monday. Have a lot of pressure from the gas but I'm really surprised no pain in the belly really (just bloating). I got really nervous Sunday night and Monday morning but made it through. It's all good!

Best wishes!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
