My band to sleeve journey

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone !

I am due to have my band out on 7th July and then a sleeve revision in oct/nov. I am so nervous and have an overwhelming fear of dying. I'm 27 year old and although I want this more than anything I'm terrified !!

Was anyone else like this? X

Yes, I was revised on May 14th and I was terrified. But I'm still here :) and all went great! I couldn't be happier with my lil sleeve. I love it!

While I've gone thru numerous surgeries (all rougher than revision, btw), my revision (all at once) is the one I was the most freaked out about. I came across an article about "Anesthesia Awareness". It's really, really rare but it's when upon giving u the several drugs to knock u out, u wake up but r unable to move, talk, even blink. But u can hear everything and feel everything. I was convinced it would happen to me. My anesthesiologist has been in practice for 35 yrs and has never personally seen a case of it - probly becuz if it does happen, ur given drugs to give u amnesia - so u don't remember any of it.

Hope I didn't just freak u out even more. Revisions (any surgery, really) r extremely safe and especially for someone ur age. I cried the morning of surgery (and I'm usually a rock when it comes to medical procedures) cuz I knew it would be the last time I saw my husband. And then the nurse gave me something to make me loopy in my iv and I felt better about it. In about 2 minutes, I was waking up to c my husband (not really 2 mins, but it seems like it). To my surprise, this was the 1st surgery I've ever had where I wasn't super nauseous afterwards. No problems with nausea at all during my recovery phase (cept for the hour following my leak test the day after. First they gave me to drink was a sugary, chalky barium which didn't sit well).

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. But, I guess I ruined that didn't I? If u didn't know about the AA, now u do and u have something new to worry about. It's like so, so very rare. Ur gunna be in a hospital with people who know what their doing, not in a hut on the African tundra. Relax. Good luck!

vjs87uk I understand where you are coming from. I had many MANY surgeries in my 55 years but the upcoming band to sleeve surgery is kind of nerve wrecking for me too. I had my band for 10 years and the last 5 years had been challenging to say at least.

I just feel like I am too old to have to go through more s$%#t .

I want to be done with this and have my peace and quiet and my "old" skinny body back the one I had lost before I got so sick and gained so much those 11 years ago when I was diagnosed with my immune system illness.

So I want the surgery done in one shot ..... band out and sleeve done.

The older I got the harder the surgeries had been on my body and that is why I am so concerned.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one feeling this way. I have lapband to sleeve revision on June 23rd and am a nervous wreck. These awful thoughts that keep going through my mind are making me scared. I'm just ready for June 24th to be here already so I can be done with the surgery part of this journey.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
