Hiccups and burping after I eat....normal?

Hi fellow sleevers - this is my first post! Yeah me!! ;) I had surgery a month ago - and am starting to eat somewhat normal food again. The thing is - I get hiccups and burp a lot after I eat. I am so worried about eating too much and stretching my stomach - but I feel like eating some normal food again too! How do you determine portion size and fullness when you are not drinking all your calories? Thanks for any help! ;)

I'm with you on that one!

I are 3 or 4 pieces of shrimp cocktail earlier

And the uncomfortable full feeling with hiccups and burping started immediately

It's so in comfortable

I to would like to know how everyone determines feeling "full" before it gets to that point! Ugh

Measure, measure, measure. That being said, when you burp or hiccup, stop and assess. Are you done? It is important to learn that "almost full" feeling. Once you master it, you'll know when you get there. Sometimes those 2 or 3 oz. is just too much, so be prepared to save some for later. Or maybe it just means that you are eating too fast?

I am only 4 days out from my VSG. I had the lapband from 5/09 -4/13. I got the hiccups all the time and I let that be my tool telling me when to stop eating. I didn't know that happens with the sleeve as well..

I am sorry, don't know about the sleeve. But, in lapband world, those are considered soft warnings that you have reached the limit of your meal. Your tummy is saying it has had enough. As I said, not sure if that is the same for your situation. Best wishes

I am only 1 week post-op so I may not be the same...but when I asked my doctor about hiccups (because they hurt so bad!), he said to be careful with things extreme temperatures. He said if things were too hot or too cold it may cause hiccups. Not sure if that is your case, but thought I would throw it out there just in case it may help.

When I first started eating pureed foods, I used the smallest spoon in the house. And only took half a spoonful per bite. And ate very very slowly. Later I bought some 1/4 cup bowls that worked out great for measuring how much I could safely eat.

Hi crystaljeanine - It looks like we are on the same page!! (same post surgery and same weight!) so great to see others out there that are on this journey!! Thanks for your reply. It sounds like we need to slow down and eat less. Its been hard for me to do that!

When I first started eating pureed foods, I used the smallest spoon in the house. And only took half a spoonful per bite. And ate very very slowly. Later I bought some 1/4 cup bowls that worked out great for measuring how much I could safely eat.

Hi joatsaint! Your video was so helpful - thank you so much! I must be overdoing it. I have just started eating a little more regular food (not just liquid and yogurt!! finally!!) and I must be eating too fast and too much. It is so hard after having a habit of doing both for so long! I guess that will be something I need to learn quickly. I like the tupperware idea - I have been eyeballing about 1/4 cup of food at a time - but it is too much for my tummy and not the right foods. I hope I haven't ruined my small stomach already!! Thank you again for your seasoned wisdom - I really appreciate people like you out there to help!! :)

Thanks kll724 - I hope you have had success with lapband! Thanks for the reply - I have been eating like a mad lady....I have to be more careful and smart about what and how much and how slowly I eat. I really hate that...but it is what I signed up for. Thanks again for your help!

I suggest making sure you're eating slowly. Give the food time to get to your stomach. Instead of wolfing food down, after 1-2 bites, put the fork down, step away and see if you can handle another bite or two in a few minutes.

I also do a " preemptive" burp when drinking liquids. I make myself burp a bit to get any air out while the liquid goes down. It helps, but I'm not sure I can tell you how to do it, nor is it official "advice." Just something I do.

Hi Teachamy! You are right thanks for your helpful reply, I really need to change my habits if this is going to work for me. I must measure and eat slowly. So hard for me....which is why I am obese! It really is mind over what I think I can handle. Its a whole new thing for me. Thanks for being there

Hi Dr Patient - I love the pre-burp idea. I feel like I am burping all the time - but I need to focus on before drinking. I will also try the "put the fork down and step away" I have just been overdoing it. I appreciate experts like you! I hope I haven't done any permanent damage....

I don't burp or get hiccups but it's almost like the food gets stuck in my esophagus and I have to do gentle rubs on that area to feel better. I am not eating enough per my doc but when my body says it's enough, well, I'm listening to that.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
