Another Puree Phase Question

Recommended Posts

I'm finding it's just easier, generally, to keep eating the "full liquids." Lite/Greek Yogurt, Cottage cheese, etc, than some of the soft meats. Nothing's come up, but I generally feel it's easier to eat and stay comfortable, whereas eggs and other soft meats just take a lot more work to get down and even then, I'm uncomfortable; mostly because I want to "wash it down" with some Water after I'm done.

So my question is, is this something I have to push through to be able to progress, or will that just come with time, and comfort is fine for now?

Appreciate your thoughts...

I may not be the person to answer this for you because I did not experience this, but I think it is important that you try to move on to the puree stage. Strictures can form at either end of your new stomach, and that is what can cause problems with ingesting thicker - pureed - foods. The opening will continue to close with scar tissue until you can no longer even get liquids down either, resulting in dehydration. This is one of the most common early side effect of RNY. I would encourage you to contact your clinic and let them know what is happening whey your try to eat pureed foods. If you are developing a stricture, I understand that it is a fairly simple outpatient procedure to have it opened. I know people that this has happened to more than one time. There is no way to predict it or prevent it. It is just the body's way of healing, and it tries to heals the opening closed.

Good luck to you!

Carol

I agree that you should be checked out by your surgeon's office.

It's important to go on with each stage that you are put on but don't do it yet until you are checked out. The sooner the better.

Good luck with what you are doing for yourself.

According to my Nut it is important to progress through the stages so you can eventually handle solid foods again and so your digestive muscle do not become "lazy"

I hope you feel better soon I'm 4 days out and will start full liquids tomorrow.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
