Pre-OP EGD Hiatal Hernia QUESTION & FUNNY thing my husband said at CHURCH HAHAHAHA!

Recommended Posts

HELLO FRIENDS,

I am having my EGD in the morning at Cleveland clinic to see if I have a Hiatal Hernia

& GERD! My Dr will then give me a recommendation for Gastric Bypass or Sleeve. The Dr. Said he would repair hernia during surgery.

QUESTION: For those of you that have had an EGD pre-op or post and had a Hiatel Hernia did the Dr. repair and if so did this help with GERD?

FUNNY THING MY HUSBAND SAID: Ok, so let the bariatric humor begin (trust me I know it is no laughing matter, just sometimes we have to chose to laugh) So, I was taking Communion at church last night and as I got back in my seat my husband leans over and says, you realize you just had your entire dinner at communion!

HAHAHAHAHHA he is so funny!

So I entered my calories into my fitness pal and said a prayer for my funny husband

Love.... Cindy

I know some doctors fix the hernia during the surgery, mine wouldn't because my bowels, and intestines broke through my stomach lining, and ripped my stomach muscle in half, causing my bowels, and intestines to just keep growing. He will fix the hernia when I reach the plateau of 18 months, so he can put everything into a mesh bag. I guess it depends on how bad the hernia is. Good luck!

I had a hiatal hernia fix too and GERD pre op, the discomfort is a lot less now but I still have it bad if I don't take my omeprizole (sp?)

My hiatal hernia was fixed during surgery and I've been on omeprazole since the so not sure that GERD is cured, just controlled so far. As far as I've been told they have to fix a hiatal hernia to do sleeve or bypass because the have to pull the stomach back. The poster with intestines and stuff through stomach muscle is not a hiatal hernia but a different kind.

I had a small hiatal hernia and occasional GERD prior to surgery. My hernia was repaired during my sleeve surgery and I have not experienced any reflux/GERD since then. I was on PPI's (omeprazole) for 9 months after surgery but have not taken any in the last 3 months.

I had surgery Monday. The doctor said my hiatal hernia was much larger than he expected from the esophogram 2 years ago. He said it took about 30 minutes longer to push everything back down in place to be sure it wasn't a problem anymore. He said it was probably the reason for all the bad reflux and coughing after I ate.

I've had absolutely NO reflux since surgery (only 4 days but still, NONE) and I used to get it even drinking Water. My doc didn't send me home on any antacids.

So, yes -- I think fixing the hernia and getting the bypass can definitely help cure reflux. My doctor explained that the lower stomach is where most of the acid forms, so since it's bypassed now, I shouldn't have any more problems.

Best wishes as you move forward.

I had a hiatal hernia repair with mesh at the same time of my gastric sleeve on 4/28/14. I have not had one problem of reflux since. I used to sleep with 3 pillows propping me up crossing my fingers that it would reduce the nightly reflux. My only problem now is that I am so used to using the pillows it is a slow release to let go of all the pillows. I am down to 2 pillows. Just like the comfort I guess. I have not had to take any Prilosec and any acid reducers since the 2 surgeries. Best 2 surgeries I have ever done.

I am pre-op and do not have a hernia, but have GERD..which has been mostly controlled. I have heard different things... some have had their GERD resolve, others still need meds... I am not sure where I will be, though I am guessing I may still have to use my meds on and as needed basis.

Best wishes on your journey.... and one thing to remember... God is in control! =)

PS~ I totally understand what you shared about humor... and what your husband shared is funny! I have to share that with my husband... he will laugh too, as he likes to make me smile and laugh no matter what is going on... he tries to bring joy and laughter...lol =)

Sincerely, Angi

Love the communion joke. It felt like a meal the 1st time after surgery. I was worried about swallowing the wafer too fast & still haven't gotten the the nerve to try the

wine. We have the option of grape juice, so sticking to that for now.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
