Happygoomom 13 Posted June 8, 2014 I had VGS surgery about 3 weeks ago. The past few days, I've started back on solid foods. The surgeon didn't impose any food restrictions once I reached this phase. My problem is that everything (including water) makes me feel ill. The first 3 bites/sips are the worst then it get a little better. When I was on the liquid diet this was less of a problem. Any suggestions?

Small bites and chew to a paste consistency. Don't drink with meals and go very slow. Start with foods you know you can handle then add a new food. It's been a struggle for me too. Still resort to a lot of soft foods and I'm 7 weeks post op. Good luck! 1 fuzzymonkey reacted to this
Unbesleeveable 110 Posted June 8, 2014 Some people have a very difficult time with Fluid and food intake, I am 13 wks post op and I still have pretty severe nausea. I am still in between soft foods and some solids. 3 wks post op, I could barely keep popsicles down....the reintroduction of foods in phases is to give your staple line time to heal and to also allow your stomach the adjustment to food once again. Good Luck
Diva2Be 21 Posted June 8, 2014 It's odd that you weren't given food/intake instructions. I'd back out of solid foods and try the pureed or soft food phases first. Your body is telling you that you arent ready yet. ... listen! And call your doctor. ..he/she owes you some nutritional instruction and help. Don't be miserable after giving yourself such a wonderful gift. Good luck!
LipstickLady 25,682 Posted June 8, 2014 I had to take two meds for nausea for my first three months. Ask your doc!
Happygoomom 13 Posted June 10, 2014 Thanks for the support and suggestions. It is so reassuring to hear that others felt nauseated too. I missed solid veggies so much that I was probably pushing difficult to digest foods too early. I've also realized that part of the nausea issue might be dehydration. It is really hard to get in 8 cups of Water per day when it takes 1/2 hr to get 1/2 cup in. I'm working really hard at this. I was given food instructions- puréed food for 3 weeks post surgery and then I was told to start introducing solids. I was told that I can start with any foods but only one new food per meal/snack. (I do have a detailed list of "eat more often" foods) Chew it to puréed consistence. If it doesn't sit well in my stomach, I should leave it for a couple weeks and then, if I want, try again. And no drinking before or with food. I am being followed by a dietician in (as well as my surgeon). The dietician emphasized that although I'll be eating small amounts of food, my overall diet still needs to be balanced- lean Protein, veggies and whole grain carbs. Again, I think I was trying too hard to meet this goal too early.
Brightfuture058 26 Posted June 12, 2014 Do you also get nauseated when you smell and see the foods as well?
Happygoomom 13 Posted June 13, 2014 Okay, I'm now 4 weeks out from surgery and the nausea is getting better. Do you also get nauseated when you smell and see the foods as well? Sometimes, but mostly it is after I eat.
Lovely Lady 46 Posted June 15, 2014 I was sleeved 3/28/14. I have also been nauseated. Just the thought of eating, makes me sick. Protein Drinks, anything. I can't drink Water, it makes me sick too. I can't wait to talk to the surgeon next week. I bet I am getting dehydrated.
Brightfuture058 26 Posted June 16, 2014 It will pass, I dealt with that for about 3 wks....Hated every minute of it. But eventually it passes, I can eat without any problems. )
pjpanda 129 Posted June 16, 2014 Oh I am so glad I found this. I'm about 3 and 1/2 weeks post op and the thought of putting anything in my body makes me want to throw up. I can handle a little bit of Water - only if it's ice cold and frozen works the best. I can tolerate chicken but that's about it, everything else makes me sick including the Protein Shakes.< /p>
Brightfuture058 26 Posted June 16, 2014 Just give your body time, eventually it will pass. I know it sucks so bad but hang in there. What helped me get over it faster was walking. The more you walk and drink Water the better you will feel.
Lovely Lady 46 Posted June 16, 2014 I do drink lots of Water. I do walk. I am worried about becoming dehydrated.
Lovely Lady 46 Posted June 17, 2014 I know you must be wondering why when I drink Water, why I think I might become dehydrated. I don't drink the amount the surgeon wants me to.
Lovely Lady 46 Posted June 19, 2014 I saw the surgeon. He gave me medication for the nausea I been having. I am looking forward for relief. His nurse suggested I get Protein Powder and sprinkle it on top my food. I lost more weight. Been swimming and walking.
