Idle hands . . . .

Recommended Posts

I am six weeks out from the big day. My doc and nut says things are going great. I am down 26 pounds since the surgery! (yeah!) I have so much more energy! I am working in the yard and committed to walking those 10,000 steps a day. So what is the problem? IDLE HANDS!!!!! My historic time to grace/knosh/snack/binge is late at night. I can't seem to kick this cycle. I have been doing well to have sugar free popcicles or turkey Jerky (my new best snack) I rationalize that it is OK because it is liquids or Protein. However, I am concerned about the future. I am afraid of this habit and want to kick it.

So here is the question for you all. . . what do you do during these times. In my case, I feel it is really a little too late to exercise. I am tired from the day and don't want to end up staying up all night due to the andrenoline, etc. I know I can't be the only one fighting this demon. So any sugguestions or guidance would be appreciated.

I too have that same concern. I am preop but trying to change my behavior now. My worst time to just start eating is between 7-9pm. One small thing I am trying is to wait to clean the kitchen and dishes till about 730 (I can't clean and eat at the same time). Lol still really hard but so far a little better. I can't

Pick up a hands on hobby like knitting or crochet, scrapbooking etc that you can do with your hands during tv time? Another good option is to sip on a low cal beverage.

I haven't had surgery yet but will probably have the same problem. Do you have any interest in crafts like scrap booking, knitting or painting? How about learning to play an instrument. You could Play board or computer games. That's all I can think off. Try googling "hobbies" and hopefully you'll find something to keep your hands busy.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
