Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for July 1st. Can't wait! Just dreading the 2 week pre-op liquid diet and worried about being able to do it.

I would love to join the group, if it's a secret one. I haven't told anybody I'm getting sleeved, and I think a few of my relatives would keel over if that came up in their FB feed! ;)

I will also join the FB page once it goes secret. I have only told a few family members and I plan on keeping it that way for a while....

Hi--I'm an Aussie but I do have friends in Missoula (and Seattle and in Coeur D'Alene). You have made a wonderful, life-changing decision. I had a lap band but got rid of it fir thud sleeve--wait until your friends and wondering if you have cancer!!! It's a great feeling to finally lose all that weight PERMANENTLY!!! Your eventual problem will be maintaining your weight!!!! Imagine that!!!!! I am 70 and a Specialist Surgeon myself and still working and the fittest I've been since I was 40. When I did my Surgical training in Seattle I was 78kg (and doing Marathons, PB 2hr 42min----flying!!!!) but I blipped out on return to Australia and reached 115kg, had a lap band and dropped to 95kg but slowly put the weight back on to 110kg. I had the lap band removed, waited a few months, and then had the sleeve--it will take you many months to get to a "stable" state and you will still have to have the odd quiet vomit in a dark place BUT so what? The feed back from your amazed friends will be worth all the petty problems and you will feel like exercising again. Good luck---my Brisbane Surgeon (John Copp) is the best in Australia.

The Facebook group is working, thanks so much for setting it up. :D

That brings me to an issue I see a lot of us are having. I don't want to join unless it's a secret group because I don't want a million questions from people. (It's none of their business but you know how people are, lol) Isn't it sad that we have to be secretive and weird about something that will literally save our lives??

Sigh.

I would also like to join the Facebook group if it is private. I have told my children, husband, and a very few close friends. All of them have been very supportive. It is a personal decision for me and my family. After the stress of research and making this important decision, I do not want to hear negative remarks from other family or friends that are not educated or been involved in this long journey. I believe a positive attitude plays a tremendous role in your recovery and I don't want negativity thrown my way. Cheers to all of us and the journey we have ahead!

I don't judge wanting to keep things private as sad at all. I was thin & athletic all the way through university and many of my FB friends are from that first part of my life & don't even know I gained 120lbs in the last 3 years. No need to advertise that!

I think I worded that incorrectly. I meant it's sad that people judge others for making the decision to have surgery! :D

I'm on July 1st, had LapBand done in 2010 and had a very bad experience, had to get it removed. Have done a lot of research on the sleeve, but still very nervous.

I'm July 8th in Mexico. My doctor bases your preop diet on your starting BMI, so I only have to do a 3 day preop. I'm really lucky in that regard. I'm so thankful for this group and this new FB group. I want to use my sleeve to its best ability and group support is part of this journey. Praying and applauding everyone. The fact that we are taking action is amazing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
