Hi- I was sleeved Jan 14 and I am down 85 lbs! I notice the past two weeks that my Protein is around 80-90. If I took away my Protein Shake it would be around 70. Has anyone been told they can stop the shakes? I have one a day and a Quest bar. Love the bar, but HATE the shakes!

If your shakes have that little Protein I wouldn't bother with them either. I drink Premier Protein with 30 grams so I really need it most days as I can't hit my 75+ just with food always.

My nutritionist said by the time I finished soft food change I should be getting away from shakes as much and as soon as possible, but I cannot get enough Protein with out having half or ⅔ of a shake every day. She gave us the goal of 60 to 70 g of Protein a day, and that sounds lower than what I hear most of the people online are shooting for, and I wonder if that is why my weight loss is a bit slower than many of you.

As of this week I am transitioning to regular food entirely, and now still finding I have to add that shake--plus regular food fills me up even faster than food! I wonder if the drive for many nutritionists and doctors to get us off at the same is because all the material say you can eat "normal" food afterwards. I am so hesitant to increase calories to get that much protein from regular food when my shakes or a Quest bar (they ARE fabulous!) get me there within my calorie limit.

At six months out I still have a Protein Drink with 30-40g Protein every day. I don't do the Protein Bars because they all taste gross to me. My restriction is so much there's no way I could eat enough to meet requirements without the shake. But if you are getting enough protein from food then you should be fine. Just make sure you make up for the decrease in Fluid if you stop the shake.

You will have to search this site, but someone posted a study that found our body can only digest x amount of protien a day. I cant remember the amount but it was below the general guide lines we have all been told. Another point was made that in one sitting our body could not digest more than 15 grams of Protein. Meaning the shakes with huge protien( I have heard one claims 40) are no more effective than those with just 15 grams. I am current using Bariatric Advantage which is 20 grams. In my opion, I would say you could stop shakes. You can always make one if you fall behind.

I started the thread called " changing how I consume my protein" because I ran across some info about Protein absorption rates. There were others who posted responses knew more about it than me. I am the 40g Protein Shake gal (premier shake diluted 1/2 and 1/2 with skim milk gives you 40g). I had been drinking the shake over 1-2 hours, but after hearing about how much our bodies can actually absorb, I've switched to drinking 1/2 (20g) in the morning over an hour and the other 1/2 in the afternoon. This way, I know I am getting all the protein I need between the shake and the food I eat without having to obsess with tracking and measuring.

I was told they are most concerned about my Protein during this 4 - 6 weeks healing stage. Very concerned. My PA told me that while it continues to be important, they do not shove Protein down my face like they do now.

Another thing, I too was told to spread my Protein throughout the day. I too use a 40 g one (isopure) and I try to do about 1/2 in the morning and then half in the late afternoon.

My thing with some of the Protein Shakes out there, and even mine, they take up a lot of calories.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. In my search, I found there are all kinds of numbers and opinions out there. Here is an example:

http://www.muscleforlife.com/the-truth-about-protein-absorption-how-often-you-should-eat-protein-to-build-muscle/

So if I get my full drink in within 2 hours, I don't sweat it.

Great article! Thanks for posting. I'm going to put a link to it on the other thread since it's so relevant..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
