talking to my young children

Recommended Posts

I have a tentitive month for my surgery and need to talk to my kids - my daughter is 6 1/2 and my son is almost 4 - we eat healthy foods already - but my portion sizes will change. Any advise will be appreciated from those with small children have done this.

Thank you,

Helena

How about, "Mommy has decided to be more healthy in what she eats, so I'll be eating a little differently sometimes, mainly I'll be eating less. Sometimes I might just have something to drink. But I will still take care of you and make good food to eat that you like."

A tip I learned during the mushie stage. I found I could put most of what the family was eating in the blender all at once with a little hot Water or broth and turn it into a mushie. The trick is to pour it into a mug that can't be seen through and spoon happily away. If you kids can see into it -- it is a good time to teach that good manners means we never say someone else's food looks yuccky or gross!

Hope this helps.

Jo Ann

6 1/2 and almost 4? why tell them at all? I personally would just let them be kids and not risk them worrying or struggling to understand what you're doing. This is a very adult decision you're making. just me.....

I partially agree with everyone here. They'll want to know what's going on when you go for your surgery, so you'll have to tell them about that. You do not, however, have to tell them what it's for, specifically, just that you need to have some surgery to be healthy. And then as far as anything else, only tell them what they need to know IF and when they ASK.

Good

wasabubblebutt - haha. that is my favorite Bushism of all time! My 2nd favorite, which we heard at work on CNN one day (note that popular), "Today, Americans are finding more money in their wallets....which is good, particularly if you happen to own a wallet"

I try to change it often but it's hard trying to decide WHICH one to use! There are soooo many Bushisms available. HA!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
