why endoscopy, colonoscopy?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, why do I read some people have to have an endoscopy and/or colonoscopy for surgery requirements? I mean, they're going in and can see all of your insides anyway.

It's not required for my husband and I. Maybe it's an insurance approval prerequisite? That sucks. And here I was fretting over the psych appt. I probably wouldn't be having this surgery if those were required. Sounds silly but when you have an anxiety problem with medical procedures it's not an easy thing to do. :( I could do an upper barium though. Not a lower. Uh uh. Nope. Lol

I did have to do an upper GI (barium swallow) and an upper endoscopy. Mostly to check to see if I have any kind of hiatal hernia. They did see they my stomach was misshaped, so honestly I'm very glad they did these tests pre-op.

I don't have to do a colonoscopy, but perhaps people who do have the have one might be precautions due to age or other factors such as family history? I know any kind of pre operative questionnaires ask hundreds of questions and if anything seems even possibly questionable the surgeon in your best interest will decide to run tests.

Good luck to you!

I told my surgeon that I was told I have a little hiatal hernia that was found from on endoscopy I had many years ago. He wasn't concerned at all. I'm glad. Lol

I'm so glad I did the endoscopy because they discovered I have barrettes esophagus which are pre cancer cells. It saved my life.i wanted the sleeve but was told I have to have gastric bypass instead.

I'm very glad my surgeon ordered an upper gi series. He was able to visualize everything prior to surgery.

Those with Barretts- did/do you have untreated/unmonitired GERD? What is the actual percentage of it turning into cancer?

I'm unfamiliar with this. Had an endiscopy many years ago because of gerd and was scripted Prilisec to take every day, which I already was for years before that. Never mentioned anything about Barretts thank goodness, just a small hiatal hernia. From what I've read only a very small percentage of people have Barretts.

Itsmekarenlee, yes a small percent of people get it. My Dad died from Barrett's many years ago that increases my chance of getting it even higher. I haven been on Prilosec and a few others over the years but was not treated the way I should be . For years I took one pill a day in the morning and it was a low dose. Now my gastroenterologist doctor increase the dose ore than doubled it and to take it twice a day before Breakfast and with dinner. I have to go back in three months for a checkup.

I had to get over the fact that I could not get the sleeve and have to get the bypass. I did a lot of research too. I have no choice it's either that or nothing and I can't live like this anymore.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
