Can someone give me a comparison on the pain you feel post op. I got approved today by ins and my date for surgery is June 26th. I'm really scared

Hi Kimteehee! I am 2 weeks post op. I had never had surgery before and I am not one to take pain well. The first 24 hours were a 7 to 8 on scale of 10 pain, but only when I moved, which I felt like I was being pushed to do a lot to get walking.

The first week for me was about a 4 or 5. I was sent home with both vicodin and percoset, strong stuff. I laid around the house all week, drugged heavily and napped every day and was still tired. By second week, the pain is a dull soreness around the incisions and abdominal wall and no more pain meds.

The only exceptions to this have been the two times I've thrown up, once this morning was about a 3, and I also threw up once in the hospital and that was like a 9 but it passed in less than a minute.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. I'm 33 lbs down and I also have the testimony of my husband who has lost 100lbs with vsg in 8 months. 100lbs in 8 months. It's amazing. Good luck on your journey!

The pain is bearable and I had gasx strips and chewable and that help, the more you walk the gas comes out.

I had my surgery on 5/30, all went well, got my drain out yesterday, but been in a lot of pain 6 days post op, very emotional today as well. Feeling depressed.

Hang in there, feeling down when getting anesthesia out of your system is normal. I struggled with that too and by 1 month out was back to my old self.. Congratulations on taking this important step to a newer healthier you!! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
