Music Festival a month after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm from North Dakota, and the big event of the summer is WeFest, which is a 3 day country music festival. It is the second weekend in August. We camp there, drink alcohol and eat crappy foods basically. When I initially looked into the surgery in November of 2013, I thought for sure I'd have it done by this summer. Well, it's June and with all the unexpected requirements from my insurence, including months of meeting with a nutritionist, I have now only completed all the paperwork and had it sent in. My insurence also could take 4-6 weeks to approve (or deny) the surgery. That being said, it could be July before I actually have the surgery. Would it be risky to go to the music festival a month after surgery? Of course I would not drink alcohol and I would pack healthy options for myself. But I'm worried it will be a struggle with my recovering body and the 90-100 degree heat, plus remembering to get all my Protein in and stay hydrated. Any opinions?!

I am a month out from my surgery (had it on 5/5/14), and am able to do pretty normal activities. I go to the gym 3 to 4 days a week (cardio only for two more weeks) and was back to work after a week. I would pose that question to your surgeon. It really also depends on what kind of post operative diet he or she has you on. Some people are on liquids for awhile before they go to soft foods. And some times it takes a bit to feel out what you can and cannot eat afterward. It would suck to be camping out with a bag of healthy foods your stomach couldn't tolerate.

I was shopping several hours within 5 days after surgery. I felt great. I walked slow, but had amazing energy. If you have a comfortable chair, an umbrella to keep from getting so overheated, and cold Water in your hand you should have a blast. You won't be so hungry, but make sure you have approved foods with you. I would not recommend snacking on foods just because it is there, so in other words, watch out for the party foods and drinks. If you start a vomiting episode you will not be having fun! Have a great time!

You should be fine. You may not have all of your energy yet but you will be ok. Pack lots of Water and smart food options for yourself and have fun! Your life is about to change for the better!!! :)

I'm planning to do this too. Thank goodness we have a camper with electricity so I can process food and blend Protein Shakes. We will be gone 12 days and 4 days at a rock concert in Montana we've never missed. I am nervous though I wonder if this is to much exercise and temptation. Any thoughts? Most places will not even allow Water in the gate and this can be frustrating if I need to stay hydrated on a hot 98 degree day. I think I will tell the people at the gate I have a medical condition and require water at all times.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
