Hi everyone,

I know this is a gross question, but is it possible to barf with a lap band. I don't mean from something getting stuck. I mean from the lower part of the stomach like with a virus or food poisoning.

I asked that very questions at my pre-op visit. The doctor said no, that I would just feel bad, but would not vomit with the flu. My dh thought that was a good deal.

hmm..thats weird because my doctor said that is is quite possible to throw up....and if we get the flu to call right away so they can give me a unfill in case I do throw up. Thats weird...wish doctors would make up their cotton pickin minds.

Oh, I threw up. It hurt like heck too because that band does not like to let things come up from the bottom part of the belly!

Now...we are supposed to try really hard to not throw up. I guess because it is pretty hard to do and it's not good for our bands. So, they always suggest taking anti-naseau meds or calling if you suspect you've got a stomach bug. In my case, it hit me all of a sudden and I wasn't prepared for it.

So, knowing that it was hard on my band I just did my best to relax so that I wasn't making things any more violent than they naturally had to be. I made out OK and once I barfed I immediately felt better. If I had continued to feel badly I would have definately called my doc for the meds.

I hope my gross story helped!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
