Hello all! I'm new to the site! My name is Antoinette and I'm 29 years old. I'm pre-surgery going through Dr. Kim in Texas. This is not the first time I've attempted to have weight loss surgery. I've tried two other times, but always hit some type of snag with the insurance company. Well since working at my current job, two people told me they successfully had it through our company insurance which is Anthem BCBS. My initial appointment was 03/22/14. I'm 5'1" and my weight was 359.8lbs. I chose the gastric sleeve option. The nurse tried to talk me into getting the duodenal switch but i decided against that. I was told by Dr. Kim he wanted me at 325 or less before he would schedule me for surgery. That sounded astronomical to me. Lol. But, i was ready for the change! I started my pre-surgery weight loss on 04/01/14 and as of today I'm down to 336.8. I have a weight check appointment next Wednesday and trying to figure out how to drop this 11 pounds in one week. Lol.

It's almost like a dream that the only thing i have left is to drop 11 pounds and complete my psychological evaluation. I can't believe this process has been so smooth. The hardest thing has honestly been me trying to lose weight on my own. A lady at the office gave me this website to find encouragement buddies and i decided to give it a try.

Congrats!!! You're on your way to a new wonderful life! Most of the time they will give you a few pounds give or take if they know you are trying. Keep up the great work and stay positive. That's half the battle! I love the sleeve!! :)

Yes try Protein drinks...watch out for the sugar and carbs...another is carbmaster yogurt which is available at Kroger...if you have one... low carb and sugar...

Also, as you progress, you can apply for free protein/vitamins/scar cream at InsureNutrition.com ... I get it delivered each month...the cream is really light and not greasy, and helped with other scars I have had for YEARS.!!!

3 Premier Protein drinks (costco - ready made) and a bag of steamer brocolli or brussel sprouts with salt and pepper every day took 18 lbs off me in 2 weeks. Lots of Water too!

I've been drinking Atkins Protein Shakes and i eat a Protein Bar. I have to admit though it's very difficult for me to go with no food at all. I tried the liquid diet and it leaves much to be desired. :-( i know I'm gonna have to do it after surgery but man no food is a foreign concept for me. And i definitely don't have much support. My boyfriend uses food and cooking to show love and boy is he a good cook. Lol

Just an update. I had my surgery 08/19 and am recovering well. The staples annoy the hell outta me but I get them taken out Friday. Yayyyy. It's been 8 days and I've already lost 14 lbs. I'm excited for what's to come. I'm finding it hard to get as much Fluid in as I should. I just feel full all the time.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
