Hello everyone,

I am interested in having the Lap Band surgery, but am feeling a little overwhelmed by the approval process.

I went to the orientation last night at my local hospital and they are tell me that I have to show 6 months of diet history for my insurance to approve the procedure. However, I looked at my insurance's website (Aetna) and they are saying I only need three months of diet history. Everything else they want seems doable if I can just get through his hurdle. I need to have the surgery before December for insurance purposes...btw.

Has anyone ran into this idea or give any advise on it?

Thank you in advance!

Jenna

Jenna,

I am just starting the process as well. Do you have comorbidities, like highs NO, night cholesterol? Every insurance is different, but if you have other health issues due to weight it may be easier. Keep in mind, your surgeon may have rules of his own before he will agree to do the procedure. Hope this helps a little. Don't get discouraged, it took me 3 months just to get all of my paperwork together. Good luck

It all vaires with the diet. I had to do a 6 month diet with my regular doctor before my insurance would approve the surgery. I had co morbities so the doctor said that he would do everything to make sure the insurance would approve my surgery. Let me tell you though those 6 months fly by and it was not hard to do i just had to show that i exercised and can change the way that i eat. My insurance sent me through an obsticle course ontop of what the doctor required me to do but in the end it was all worth it. I hope everything works out for you !!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
