Alternatives to sweet tasting protein drinks.

Recommended Posts

I am not a sweets person, so all these Protein Drinks are really tough to get down. There doesnt seem to be any options other than chocolate , vanilla strawberry and a variety of juice type flavors. Any one else having this issue? I have zero regrets about the surgery, but I am concerned about having to get down these shakes for many years to come. Thanks!!!!

Unjury's chicken Soup protein:

http://www.unjury.com/store/protein/reg/chicken_soup_flavored_protein.shtml

Use unflavored Protein and stir it in to beef broth, creamy soup, or miso or egg drop soup.

Just remember that if you are adding protein to anything hot, you should use a food thermometer to make sure it is under 130 degrees.

That is a GREAT idea! I am ok with sweets BUT sometimes i like a plain old bowl of soup and this is great to get the protein in!

oh I forgot to mention, there are Protein Soup mixes you can buy too:

I used the HealthSmart Soups a fair amount. My favorites were cream of Tomato, cream of broccoli, and cream of mushroom. A nice thing about these is that they are designed to be made with hot Water or milk -- you can go over 130 degrees as long as the hot water is not boiling and the protein won't curdle.

I have the same issue. It's not that I wouldn't enjoy Desserts but some of the Protein drinks ARE too sweet. I have a supply that I have to use because it's too expensive to throw away. To the chocolate shake I added a teaspoon of Hershey's unsweetened cocoa powder. This helped a lot. To the vanilla, I add a teaspoon of cinnamon. Sounds like a lot but it tastes so much better that way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
