I'm having a hard time deciding between gastric bypass and sleeve. Any input would be wonderful. I'm leaning more toward bypass because of sugar addiction. I'm hoping dumping syndrome will help kick the habit. But I like the idea of sleeve so that I won't get malnourished.

I'm having the same dilemma though am also leaning towards the bypass. The sleeve seems like a good idea because it's a simple operation but so is the lapband and in the long run that turned out to work not so well. I think a lot of the places that used to push the band are now pushing the sleeve for the same reason the band was attractive

I had the band put in 9 years ago. I had a lot of heartburn and throwing up. I was thinking of have the sleeve as my sister lost 100+ lbs. I've decided to have gastric bypass as I was told I would not have acid reflux with it. I'm due to have surgery in the next month or so.

Yes that's one of the complications I would not be happy with: reflux

I'm having bypass... I didn't even consider the sleeve because I have reflux and the sleeve can make that worse. I also wanted to go with bypass because it has a better success rate and a higher percentage of excess weight loss. I wanted to go with what gives me the best chance of success.

You have to take Vitamins and supplements regardless of which surgery you have.

So is reflux less of a problem with with bypass than sleeve? I currently have reflux and take omeprazole. One less pill world be an Advantage

My understanding is that yes, the bypass will not cause acid reflux.

My doctor told me that most of the stomach acid is produced in the lower part of the stomach. So, with bypass, that gets disconnected and you won't have all that acid coming up in your throat. With the sleeve, you still have some lower stomach there so you may still have problems with reflux.

My endoscopy results were not as good as I wanted. I have Barrettes esophagus which are pre cancer cells. I wanted the sleeve today my surgeon said I can't get the sleeve because of Barrettes so now I have to have the bypass. My surgery date is August 18th. I'm a little disappointed.not having the sleeve. I'm so worried about dumping syndrome. I'm if I don't eat fats and sugar I should be alright. Can someone tell how they are doing with the bypass surgery. How long where you out of work?

I'm having the same decision. I went to True Results in Houston and I was advised to get a Lap Band. I did my researched on the Lap Band and didn't like what I found. True resukts only do Lap band or Gastric Sleeve. So I changed my mind and started the paprework to get sleeved. Today I found out that I was approved fr the sleeve, but now I'm having some serious doubts. If I'm going to get a WLS why don't I go for the gusto. I also have a sugar addiction, so I can see myself wolfing down hard candy after I get sleeved. I made an appointment to see a doctor who specialize in Gastric Bypass. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions....

The only good thing is I know I will get approved for whatever WLS I choose.

My dr referred to the bypass as the Gold plan and also said that since I have reflux I should have bypass. Sleeve will make reflux possibly worse

Bypass is considered the gold standard for weight loss surgery -- meaning it is the most tested and considered most successful. Basically gold standard means all the other surgeries are compared to it. The sleeve started as the first step of bypass -- for those patients where bypass would be too risky, they would do the sleeve first and then after some weight loss, go back and do the complete bypass. However, they were seeing some patients doing quite well with the sleeve and started offering that without planning for the rest of the bypass later.

Some recent studies are showing that the sleeve is becoming more common. Lap band is falling off in favor -- my doctor said he rarely performs it and only in very young patients with not a lot to lose. http://connect.asmbs.org/may-2014-bariatric-surgery-growth.html

It is scary to make a choice and bypass certainly does have slightly more risk associated but for me, I think that slight bit of additional risk is worth the extra benefits of going for bypass. And, like I said, I have reflux and don't want to take a chance on that getting worse. I'm right at the stage before Barrett's and I don't want to move further down that path.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
