Nicolanz 1,484 Posted June 1, 2014 I had coffee 3 weeks post op when I returned to work! I just had to! But I'm not sure what the rules were about coffee post op. mrs.melmcc 18 Posted June 1, 2014 I started drinking coffee about 2 1/2 weeks post-op. It didn't say I couldn't just that it might upset my sleeve. I've had no issues and I'm still getting all my fluids in so coffee it is!
gottagonow 82 Posted June 1, 2014 My doc doesn't prohibit it at all. They just think it doesn't help with dehydration and encourage a strict following of the required liquids, especially for coffee drinkers. Maybe have a chat with them.....
Who Dat 70461 331 Posted June 1, 2014 I started drinking Decaf a few days after surgery, then real coffee again (the leaded stuff, no decaf! ) at about 5-6 weeks. I'm a little over a year out and I now drink about 6-8...sometimes 10 cups a day. Splenda, a little Hershey's cocoa powder and/or sugar-free vanilla Coffee-Mate. I know, I know...that's a lot of coffee and it's really bad for me and my heart will probably explode and it affects global warming and...whatever! I enjoy it and thus far it hasn't had a negative impact, so I'm drinkin' it! Some folks tolerate it fine and others have issues. Good luck and Godspeed on your journey! 2 GabyTovar7 and par1959 reacted to this
tebowfan 70 Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) My doc said a cup a day, two max. No more having the entire pot. I had surgery on the same day, May 7th. Edited June 1, 2014 by tebowfan
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) Then have your cup of coffee. Really. Some doctors say no coffee and some say no restriction. No idea why there is a difference other than superstition. Coffee is a daily staple! The caffeine from coffee also is a mild thermogenic and will metabolize fatty acids in the blood stream -a fat burner.. There are many benefits to coffee. Just don't overdo it because dehydration is no fun in more ways than one. par1959 470 Posted June 1, 2014 I have been able to have 2 cups of coffee a day since day one. In fact, I am on day 5 and enjoying a very rich cup of Joe as I write this. Even has a splash of fat free in it.
MoBee 21 Posted June 1, 2014 My MD said no joe for 2 months.......hoping I can last that long ????
LivingFree! 478 Posted June 1, 2014 It seems that so many surgeons have so many different requirements on this one--probably the biggest subject of controversy I've seen among all the issues we deal with about WLS! My surgeon was strict--no caffeine for one year, and even after that I'm supposed to limit to one serving/day. I've pretty much trained myself to comply, but it IS a 16 oz cup! Of course there's exceptions--anyone who has a specific medical condition, like being prone to ulcers for instance, would obviously want to adhere to a different set of rules about caffeine than others. But on the other hand, sleeved or not, if we're downing 6 pots of coffee a day, it's probably time to revisit and revise that habit. Otherwise, I kinda agree with Fiddleman--for those of us with long-healed sleeves--enjoy that cup o' joe! 1 Who Dat 70461 reacted to this
abordenster 43 Posted June 1, 2014 I didn't drink coffee again after the pre-op diet. And during that I drank tazo English Breakfast. I caved and had a nonfat latte three days post op. I switched to an espresso machine. I make sure the roast is not acidic. I told the nutritionist that I have 2oz of espresso with milk and she said no good. It could hinder weight loss. It isn't good for a healing stomach. But I worked for a coffee roaster for seven years in my twenties. It's been very hard to give up. I would just advise to watch the acidity in the coffee you choose. Even Decaf could have high acid depending on the roast. I use truvia in it. Sugar is no good. It makes me feel like crap. I'm glad to see your doing well.
