Wearing cpap after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Please keep wearing your CPAP! If you feel like the pressure is too high tell your dr and have them lower it. I am a RN and worked in a sleep clinic for years ....... Weight loss can definitely improve your apnea but it doesn't necessarily mean it will completely go away. Some people think that only overweight or old people have sleep apnea, that is so not true. We had many people in our clinic weighing 100 pounds soaking wet who have severe sleep apnea so it's not just weight related. However there were also patients who were very overweight and when they lost the weight the sleep apnea went away. You won't know if your apnea is gone unless you have another sleep study, I have a CPAP and I hate it but won't stop wearing it until I know my apnea is gone.

Thank you so much for this info! They didn't tell me to bring it on Monday when I go for my surgery. I was going to take it anyway. I was expecting to immediately be relieved of sleep apnea after surgery. Now I see it isn't that easy! Lol! Silly me!

Well my hospital not only wants me bring mine, they asked that I be compliant for an entire month prior to surgery. Looks like I will be on my pre surgery liver-shrinking diet all of August but I'm going to be cuddled up with Uncle Snuffly, the C Pap at night. I knew surgery was going,to change things but it looks like August will be a change also. Goodbye, fat complacent uncomplicated life, changes are going to be happening.and,happening,fast. No time for food funerals, I am going to be too busy! OMG -'WHAT HAVE I AGREED TO DO? OSU 🏣you are behind this all, if I didn't 💘 you for surgery😷 and the chance at a new life, I'd come blow💥 you up!

I also need to be compliant for surgery. Not a problem for me because my new CPAP is my buddy. So much better than the old models. Only problem is they won't accept an evaluation from my current pulmonologist, I have to use one associated with their hospital. Pushes my surgery date back two week.

I would wear it because the obstruction from snoring can probably cause you to wake up at multiple times throughout the night.. your body needs all the sleep it can get to fully heal.

Least that’s what was said to me when I had my sleep study done :/

My surgeon required me to wear it for two weeks prior to surgery and to bring it to the hospital. If not, they would have canceled my surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
