What makes a bandster "ewe-nique" not like the other sheep

Recommended Posts

Ok I have been banded for only 3 weeks but I have noticed some changes other than losing weight. I was just wondering what others have experienced or new ways people are living. An example:

1) While driving in a shady part of industrial Calgary with my wife on Saturday I noticed two punks pushing drugs by the local drinking establishment. I drove over and called them to the window, while my wife dug her nails into my arm and insisted on leaving... I showed them a $50 and said could I get a Kilo of Benefibre! They asked me what that was so I told them "soluable natural fibre good for ruffage and scrubbing the blood vessels clear of plaque". They walked away.... my Quest for inexpensive Benefibre continues.

2) I found myself doing butt-crunches/clenches on the local Light Rail Transit while going to work...anyway to burn extra calories...I hope no one noticed

3) Since I have passed the magic 21 diet thing my cravings for dirty carbs have diminished totally. I also have more energy for my kids and tend to be away from the TV and outdoors alot.

Does anyone else have any benefits or ways or unique ways to live healthier?

Gaffer ~ YES i know the other benefit of weight loss for men as you have posted. God bless Mrs. Gaffer!!! (please note: that is a non-denominational God)

You go with your bad self CanMan! (how do you like my hood talk?) I'm with wife about approaching drug dealers, didn't you get the band to EXTEND your life? How do you know that didn't have a gun and would have shot you for your remarks? huh???

Glad to know that things are good for you and you are doing well.

Awww...thanks for the well wishes "blush"!:) I first had weight loss surgery 20 yrs. ago when I was 9 yrs.old!! (heehee) Okay I was 26 yrs. old!:) At the time I weighed 260 lbs and after having my stomach stapled (VBG) I was able to lose 147 lbs. within a year and a half or so. I was able to maintain my weight pretty much at 113 lbs. for several years but the problem with the VBG was the staples start to separate and the stomach begins to stretch out again "sigh".

Last year I weighed 251 lbs. and was afraid I would not live to see my then 9 yr. old daughter grow up. I was depressed and my body was breaking down. My family doctor happened to mention a pamphlet Dr. Chris Cobourn of www.obesitysurgery.ca had sent him and I took it home to read. The cost of surgery seemed prohibitive but after several weeks I told my husband let's at least go and see him. We went for a consult and I brought my medical records showing my past weight loss surgery. I was sooo afraid that Dr. Cobourn would look at the paperwork, see that I had lost 147 lbs. only to gain it almost all back and say you are a failure! But instead he was very supportive and told me that I hadn't failed, the VBG had and that is why it was no longer performed the way it was when I had it.

Anyways we ran the tests, he was able to operate and band me and I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Cobourn and the clinic! It wasn't a miracle cure but it has allowed me the tool to once again take control in managing this food addiction that I will always have to deal with. At times it was frustrating because it took me personally 4 fills and 4 months to reach my sweet spot and restriction. But Dr. Cobourn was always encouraging and motivating me saying we will get you to restriction and that I just had to be patient! He was my biggest cheerleader! Well he was right!! The day of surgery I weighed 251 lbs. on April 18th, 2006, and as of today I weigh 167 lbs and plan to reach 125 lbs. by the end of October at the latest. I continue to receive support from the clinic and Dr. Cobourn when I need fills or have concerns or need advice. When I needed further surgery in January of this year due to scar adhesions (the result of numerous abdominal surgeries over the years) Dr. Cobourn was there to operate again and rectify this problem for me also! I am especially grateful to only live 8 miles away from the clinic and I can't wait to go tomorrow and thank Dr. Cobourn again for helping me to feel my life is worth living again!!

Donna thank you so much for that post. Happy bandiversary and you should be so proud of yourself. It was really encouraging to read that as I am struggling for restriction. I am 2 months out of surgery and due for my second fill soon. Thanks again.

Since you are hanging out in the questionable parts of Calgary, you must be near a costco. Go there to buy your Benefiber, they run more powder than Tony Montana. Dont deal in street benefiber, they could cut it with anything, even icing sugar.

2) I found myself doing butt-crunches/clenches on the local Light Rail Transit while going to work...anyway to burn extra calories...I hope no one noticed

I heard about this on the news. Were you the guy crushing Walnuts outside Anderson Station? My mother warned me about guys like you. :heh:

3) Since I have passed the magic 21 diet thing my cravings for dirty carbs have diminished totally. I also have more energy for my kids and tend to be away from the TV and outdoors alot.

I know what you mean, and it is great. I dont dread getting up off the floor when I have to stop the baby from eating the fern/vacuum hose/shoes/ whatever else he spots.

Gaffer ~ YES i know the other benefit of weight loss for men as you have posted. God bless Mrs. Gaffer!!! (please note: that is a non-denominational God)

Great aint it. Trust me, it only gets better. Mrs Gaffer is blessed.

Other benefits I have found is that there are going to be alot more fat guy clothes in the thrift stores around Calagry these days, I just filled my 5th bag the other day. Good new... more closet space. Bad news... nothing to were and my ass crack is hanging out even more that it used to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
