My Surgery is June 16th. I have had several surgeries (unrelated to bypass) in the last few years. You don't need to bring much. They suggest you wear comfortable clothes (or bring a set of comfortable clothes to wear home). Comfortable non-slip shoes. leave valuables, computers, phones, jewelry etc. at home. Bring a list of your meds (the hospital should have told you this at your pre-op appt). If you think you might be bored, you can bring a book, but i wouldnt bring anything you would be afraid to have lost or stolen. There realy isnt anything special you need to bring... the hopsital won't let you take your medications from home, they will make you lock up your valuables, they will dress you in the gown and non-skid socks. Before surgery you wont be able to eat or drink, and when you wake you won't need food from home, or be allowed to eat or drink anything except what they give you.

My suggestion... leave everything except a book and a loved one (for hand holding and a ride home of course) at home. The only thing you need to worry about at the hopsital is you. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I took slippers and hair brush, something loose to wear home, like a lounge dress.... and that was it. If you use your IPHONE etc take that and the charger. You probably won't care about anything else. They provide all you need.

My surgery isn't until July 23, but from my recent surgeries, I've learned to pack the following

hairbrush

ponytail holders

Shampoo (I hate what the hospital offers)

tooth brush

tooth paste

phone

charger

extension cord

lip balm

3-4 pairs of underwear (depending on length of stay)

a comfortable outfit to wear home

a book or two

medication list

insurance cards

baby wipes for freshening up before you can shower

thank you cards (to write notes for gifts given in the hospital and to leave one for nursing staff)

a pen

I did take lip balm, The insurance card etc goes w/o saying. Underwear...I did't feel like wearing any. I couldn't shower so no need for Shampoo etc. Thank you cards? That can wait until I feel better. I was only there two nights. I didn't read, I slept....

I brought my Kindle and iPod. I also brought my favorite pillow. Comfy PJs that I changed into as soon as they would let me because I didn't want to walk the floor of the hospital in those lovely gowns. Normal toiletries that you would take for overnight. We were encouraged to bring our own Protein shake if we had one we liked, and I did that. Finally, don't forget your c-pap if you use one. My clinic would not operate without it, and that would be an awful reason for a delay! Keep in mind, you will most likely only be there overnight. You don't need much!

GOOD LUCK!! Life is great on the other side!

They told me to bring my mask only and know my settings. I did but then they never used it. I was on oxy the entire time. I would never have been able to tolerate PJ's, the band around my waist. I put a gown on backwards for a robe for walking. I didn't start shakes till I got out of the hospital. I attended a pre admission required class before surgery. Each thing like that depends on the doctor

Wear what you want to wear home. I'd highly suggest a muumuu or very loose dress. I was upset that I brought my comfy pants as I didn't want anything touching my incisions. So this is what I brought (overnight stay only):

Insurance card

ID

Meds I normally take (one of each)

Hairtie

Bobby pin

iPhone and charger

The clothes and flip flops I was wearing

Seriously that is all you need PLUS a good chapstick! Even that you don't really need. I forgot mine and they just gave me a chapstick of my own. I fit everything I needed in a wristlet. That should be all you have.

God forbid you have to stay longer but if you do, your family or friend, I'm sure, would be happy to bring you whatever you needed.

Pack LIGHT! And best of luck!!!

Pack light indeed. The hospital would not allow me to bring my own meds, most of them don't.

Good luck tomorrow on your surgery. I will be saying a prayer for you. I will be having mine in October. I suggest you bring comfy shoes and something comfy to wear. A hairbrush, toothpaste and toothbrush.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
