My mom had Roux-en-y and 15 years later she is still laid out for 30-60 minutes from "sugar overdose". it can happen by eating at a BBQ and they don't tell her what's in the sauces. I seen it happen from alcohol sugars, sauces, drinks, food everything has to be tested with a tiny bite or asks about ingredients.

I though that was because of the intestine rerouting. But I see here sleevers have the same issues? Is that true?? Not that I plan to run out to a chocolate fountain, but I have seen a piece of candy make her "spin" for like 30 min.

Is it extreme? Why does it happen?

That's dumping. My understanding is that it happens a lot to people with R-n-Y because there is no more functioning pyloric valve. That means that foods just get "dumped" very rapidly into the intestines, and they can't handle processing a lot of sugar so fast. It is much rarer with sleevers, because we do have a functioning pyloric valve. However, are stomachs are still very small, so food can empty rapidly into the intestines and so some sleevers do get dumping syndrome but it is not very common for us at all.

I am not a medical professional, but I have known a fair number of people with R-n-Y and read a lot about dumping in various wls forums, and I have to say your mother's case does sound very extreme just based on the little I have observed and heard.

There have been maybe two or three sleevers in the support groups I attend who have experienced dumping episodes occasionally. I personally have never had any dumping issues in my three years since surgery. Sleevers I know have not experienced it.

Sorry your mom has to endure such extreme discomfort. Since her procedure was 15 years ago and there has been so much progress made in the field of RNY since then, I wonder if there would be any kind of revision surgery she could have done to correct this for her to improve her quality of life.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
