Pre & Post surgery food

Recommended Posts

I'll be banded next Thursday, June 5th. Super nervous, but excited!

I'm going out today to stock up on post-surgery food. My surgeon doesn't require any type of pre-surgery diet. I had planned on being good, eating Protein and low carbs. But I haven't done very well with this. It's so hard to say good-bye to foods I won't be eating for awhile!!

What should I stock up on? My list so far is pedialyte, ensure, Protein shakes, V8.

That's all I can think of. What do you guys recommend for the first 2 weeks? Especially the first 2 days?

We don't know what post surgery diet your Dr requires so it's hard to advise? I was on liquids 4 days, mushees 4 days, pureed for 2 weeks. Each Dr has their own protocol.

I'm sorry, I didn't think about different doctor requirements post-surgery.

Mine requires 2 days of Clear liquids (and I think broth is included here.)

Then 2 weeks of just liquids

Then 2 weeks of pureed.

I'm not so worried about the pureed part yet. I'm sure I will be in 3 weeks, but for now, I'm just trying to stock up for the first 16 days.

You'll be lucky to just get Water down the first 2 days but, there's always crystal light, popsicles, broth. Liquids could be Tomato Soup, yellow squash Soup or any of the runny Soups. I liked egg drop soup, just make sure it's blended well. I wasn't too creative, I just relied mostly on Progresso Soups for my 4 days.

oops, and of course, lots of shakes and don't ask me which ones are good, they all stink.

My doctor had me do each stage for a week or so... Clear Liquids for the first few days, then full liquids, then smushies, then food. I would get some sugar free Jell-O and pudding. Yogurt, canned fruit (no grapes). Applesauce, broth, cream Soups, puréed food (baby food), canned tuna. Various Protein powders, low fat milk, sugar free Popsicles... Just some things I wanted on hand! :-)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
