3 weeks post op & no protein yet !

Recommended Posts

Okay guys I have no acquired a horrible mucus problem with this surgery. Each time I drink anything I either spit it up or I'm constantly spitting up the mucus. I've tried one Protein Shake and was only able to get maybe 4 sips in, in between me spiting it up. I've called my surgeons nurse who said since my surgeon repaired a hernia it can take me almost an entire month to a month and a half to feel better. I am so pissed off and frustrated with this entire process. I mean obviously ppl loose weight when their basically starving there body and that's what I'm doing ! My question is has anyone been though anything like this? I don't know what to do at this point.

Different doctor but I had a hiatal hernia repaired when sleeved on May 5th. I have had no trouble with Protein Shakes or anything else. I have been on full liquids for 3 weeks with another week to go.

Hi Antonia, I suffered with the mucus issue and my suggestion is to get something for acid reflux and it should help...Its the acid in your stomach...I had my surgery the same day as you I believe and I AM STRUGGLING with getting fluids etc in...Well I can drink as mush as I like but the food makes me uncomfortable. However energy is extremely low .My doctor said I may be dehydrated a little and also gave me B12 to take weekly. If you are unable to drink ...do popsicles to stay hydrated. I wish you the very best...You must get fluids in and stay healthy...the weightloss is not that important to me...Also u are welcome to text me at 904 -520-0098

That sounds rough! Are you getting enough fluids at least? It's dangerous if not. Would it be easier to drink clear Protein Drinks like Isopure maybe? The response from your doctor's office didn't seem to address your specific situation. Might be worth trying again and talking to someone else. I hope this gets better soon.

My husband and I had surgery on the same day and he had a hernia repaired and I didn't. I had no issues drinking or eating and he was miserable. It took him at least a month and a half before he could drink anything more than a few sips and Protein Shakes were not even an option, he would get terrible pains and end up vomiting. However, IT DOES GET BETTER! He is 11 weeks out and has no problem eating or drinking. I don't remember the exact week that things started turning around for him but I want to say around 2 months. Keep hydrated as best you can and just know that things will get better each day.

I have no experience with the hernia issue, but it sounds extremely dangerous to me for ANY WLS patient to not be getting any Protein in the first critical 3-4 weeks post-op. Antonia_megan, if I read your post right and you are not getting ANY Protein down, please call back your surgeon's office. You have to have protein to survive and heal. Take good care and keep us posted how you are doing.

One of the girls who had surgery yesterday had a hitial hernia. She was told Clear Liquids only for 15 days. then 10 days of regular liquid, then on to puree for 10 days. You might want to back away from the non clear Protein drinks and use Isopure or powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury that are clear and should help with the mucus.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
