Looking for a surgeon in Rochester New York

Recommended Posts

I have the nightmarish (if that's a word) lapband! Awful from the beginning!!!. I am going to have the band taken out and thinking about having the sleeve put in. Has anyone had their surgery from band to sleeve at Highland Hospital in Rochester New York. I am wondering about Dr. William O ' Malley. I have read a lot of good reviews on him but I was really looking for someone in this group to share their experience! Thank you so much and I love the people in this group!

i loved dr joseph johnson. many people have o'malley. mostly everyone loves him, but say his manner can be abrasive. dr johnson is the chief of surgery at highland. no matter which doc you get, you have the same team pre and post op.

good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. I am just getting started so I'm kinda lost. Do you know if Highland hospital or the surgeons has a group for discussions. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I hate the lap band! Ugh

i know there's a support group... but i have heard mixed things about it. its a teal life support group, not online.

there is a band revision group here on bariatricpal.com i think you will get pretty honest responses.

I have read that Lael E. Forbes is good too. She knows her stuff, real thorough and has a good bedside manner. She is from a buffalo hospital that left there to come to highland hospital in Rochester. Glad to have her on board.

I am currently in the insurance approval process and my surgery is scheduled for Oct 21st with Dr. DiBenedetto out of Rochester General. He gives everything to you straight. No fluff. Very serious about his job as a surgeon and wants to see commitment out of his patient. I get the impression he is a perfectionist and to me, you could not ask for a better quality in a surgeon.

a former boyfriend had him. i wont tell you the words he's used to describe him. but he was and is happy with his outcome.

If you need a DR to hold your hand and make you feel all warm and fuzzy all the time he is not it but if you want someone that will tell you all the facts and be matter of fact with the expectations and possible complications he is the guy.

dr johnson at highland was very clear with me about everything. he did not sugarcoat anything. he was up front, direct and honest. he was also kind and caring, empathetic, responsive, listened to my concerns and was respectful of my knowledge about medicine and the body. its not required that someone be mean to get their point across. but having worked in chemical dependency treatment for more than 10 years, i understand how people get that way.

Just to clarify, Dr. DiBenedetto is not mean in way shape or form. In fact, he has quite a sense of humor when it is appropriate. His main concern is that the patient understand the seriousness of this procedure. He cares about his patients.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
