Has anyone NOT lost any hair? Please reassure me.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm 7 weeks out and starting to freak out about Hair loss. It hasn't happened yet, but I keep reading posts of people losing tons of hair and it is scaring me. So, if you have not experienced any hair loss and are

over 6 months out, I would love to hear from you so I know it doesn't happen to everyone. Also, if you have tips

on why you think you didn't lose any hair, I will try anything (lol). Thanks.

I would be interested to hear if anyone else hasn't lost their hair too! It's very common, and the reason behind it is that our bodies take the nutrients being fed to our hair and nails, even our skin and re-route them to more critical parts of our body. Such as our hearts, lungs and brains. Now, trust me I'd rather have what little I ate post op going to function my vitals. Hair and nails can grow back, right?

The best thing you can do to help the situation is to take your supplements, take some Biotin, get all of your Protein in and drink plenty of Water. It's really hard living on only 300-400 calories for a few months, but the outcome is worth way more than a few lost strands of hair.

Only in my fourth month post-VSG did I lose some hair. I was expecting to lose a lot, but for me, it wasn't that bad.

I began to put it in a baggie, just to see, but i stopped that. And I didn't do all the vitamins-thing...but that does seem to help most.

Now approaching my 6th month next week, it seems to have abated. Most say it comes back, so maybe just hang tight should it happen. This, too, shall pass.

I'm 7 months out and still losing quite a bit of hair. I've been taking Biotin, but I don't think it has helped at all!

I am past five months, going into six. I do not want to jinx a good thing.....and I am mentally prepared for hair loss, but so farrrrrr I have only noticed a few extra strays laying about. At my last visit a couple of weeks ago, my bariatric physician recommended that I continue with my Vitamins, D3, B12, Calcium and Biotin (10,000 mg). My calories are still at 800 +- and my Protein was increased to 8 grams. My Fluid intake is 64-80 ounces. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

For a while my nails were shredding and my hair and skin were very dry. That has improved now - a lot. I do not want to drop the Biotin right now because it is a hair, skin, and nails product.

I wish I could say that I didn't lose hair, but sadly I cannot.

I started losing at 2 months and it's continued to month 6, although now it's slowing down. I've lost quite a bit on top in the front - it is noticeable. I've also lost a lot on the sides. I have a lot of re-growth now - these hairs are about 1/4"-1/2" long. It makes styling difficult, but it's nice to see.

As mentioned above, you lose hair because, to your body, hair is optional. It's going to take care of the vital organs and necessities before hair.

I've taken Biotin (which helps for re-growth) and Folic Acid with the approval of my doc. I use Nioxin Shampoo. I also use a product called Toppik which helps cover the thin areas.

I will be honest - for me, the Hair loss was horrifying at times. It's embarrassing. HOWEVER, I would do this all over again, even if the next time the hair loss is worse. This surgery has changed my life. I'm glad I did it and I wouldn't change a thing.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone for your comments. I will talk to my doctor about Biotin. I'm only taking a

Multivitamin as of now and would like to add more, but I also want to follow what my center is

telling me to do. They said if I have Hair loss it would only be 5 to 15% of my hair that I would

lose so that didn't seem so bad at the time, but with everything I'm reading it seems like some

people are losing way more than that. Concentrate on the positive I guess. I really appreciate all

your comments. Thank you.

Hey Shelley! I would suggest looking into either Bosley or Nioxin shampoos and conditioners. They work! If one is deficient in Biotin, it may cause your hair to become thin and brittle. It is a Water soluble Vitamin so whatever is not needed, the kidneys flush out. There are lots of claims that it helps with Hair growth but it hasn't been proven. Biotin deficiencies are rare. Just a thought before you go out and spend more money on Vitamins.< /p>

There is another thread on this same topic going on right now (surprise, surprise). My comment was there is NO way to predict. I take my Multivitamins, but nothing special for hairloss (biotin, shampoos, etc.) and at 5 1/2 months out I have had no Hair loss. Other people have been avid about their special supplements and still lose hair. I read up on this before surgery and decided not to waste my money. If it happens, it happens....that's what clippers and hats are for. But with all the weight I've lost, I've been asked many times if I've been sick or if I have cancer (seriously!). A shaved head would REALLY get the rumor mill rolling.

I had surgery 3 months and a week ago, and have not lost any hair yet. I'm not always super perfect in getting all my Protein in, and sometimes I have more carbs than I should, but I'm totally satisfied with how I'm doing to this point. I even colored my hair a few days ago with a semi-permanent dye, and had no loss from that either. My nails are hard and healthy, as usual, and seem to be growing just as fast as they always do.

It seems that Hair loss is a personal thing, not everyone is the same, so it is difficult to try and compare yourself to others about this.

I'm 4 months out and haven't lost any hair.I don't get all of my liquids in,but I do get all of my protein.I've always had thick hair but I feel like it's been growing at a faster rate since the surgery;my hair stylist has said the same thing.A lot of people take Biotin or hairfinity (pills)...I've seen better results with hairfinity though.I hope this helped some.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
