Just called my surgeons office and they told me they sent my paperwork to my insurance company Wednesday. I hope it gets approved, but do have my doubts. I have UHC Choice plus and they require BMI 40 or above, psych eval., and 5 years of being obese. I have the first 2 requirements with no problem. The third requirement is might be a problem. As with most overweight people my weight has been up and down through the years. I lost over 100 lbs between 2005 and 2006 and my BMI was in normal range. I started to gain back my weight and was once again obese in 2011. That only gives my 4 years. Back in 1993 I lost over 100 lbs and by 1995 was once again obese. I included all the notes from the doctors office from 1993-1998 and am hoping that those, along with my doctor notes from 2011-2014 will be enough to convince insurance to approve me. Keeping all my fingers and toes crossed. I don't want to have to self-pay.

Gosh, I would think they would know that multiple 100 pound losses aren't so good for you and would like you to put an end to that. Do you have co-morbid conditions? Do they want you to have 6 months of supervised weight control?

I hope it works out for you. I would approve you! lol

Hi Lynn, They don't require 6 months supervised weight control program, which I am happy about. As far as co-morbid conditions I have arthritis. I agree with you, with my history you would hope they would figure surgery would be better for me. I have been with the same insurance company since 2000.

I just noticed that you have your surgery date coming up very soon. Does your surgeon have you on a liquid diet? Good luck with your surgery.

I just got call from a nurse with United Health Care wanting to do my surgical admissions counseling. He asked me when my surgery date is and I told him that I didn't have one yet. I was still waiting for approval from UHC. He told me that he would call me back in a couple of weeks and see if I have a date yet. I wonder if this means that the UHC might just be approving me, but he let it out of the bag early. Fingers and toes are all crossed. Feeling very hopeful.

My paperwork was submitted today. I have Anthem BC/BS. I was told by my case organizer that they approve pretty quickly. Crossing my fingers. But, I'm trying my best not to think about it every single minute of the day. Very nervous and scared, but excited! Trying not to get my hopes up because I keep hearing stories about the insurance company coming back wanting more info or something. So, I guess I will just have to wait.

Looks like we get to be nervous all weekend Bobby46. Let's keep thinking positive thoughts that we both will be approved and will hear the beginning of next week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
