Sleeve and gall bladder problems

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for a revision sleeve in June. Has anyone experienced gall bladder problems after being sleeved? I have heard it can be a problem.

Yes. I was sleeved January 7, 2014. I am still unable to eat solid food because of intense and constant nausea. I am still on Protein drinks. I had my gallbladder removed 3 weeks ago - it was full of stones and stiff and had a lot of thick sludge in it. The doctor said it needed to come out - so it did. He also thought that might solve my nausea problem. It didn't. So I am now missing 2/3's of my stomach, my gallbladder, and FOOD! But I would still do it again because the weight loss has made me feel so much better inspite of the nausea.

The gallbladder surgery was more painful than the gastric sleeve, but two weeks later, I was healed enough to return to my Water aerobics and felt good as far as the surgery goes. I can't tell you how it affects eating/food as I don't know. Good luck.

Gallbladder problems can occur with any weight loss surgery. IMO, it happens more frequently w/ those who lose very rapidly because it overwhelms your gall bladder's ability to process fat. This was not an issue for me, but a friend's mom who got the bypass had to have hers removed about 2 months post-op.

Also gallbladder problems can occur from any rapid weight loss method. Surgical or non-surgical. A friend and I both had issues and had them removed years ago after we were both doing a slim-fast diet and dropped weight quickly.

I had issues before the sleeve so I had it removed at the same time. Overweight women are also just more likely to have gallbladder issues according to several docs i have talked to.

I'm not currently expencing problems but my GI Doc has ordered an ultrasound just to see how things are looking. He told me the recipe for gallbladder fail was fair skinned, female, fertile and forty. He also said that quick weight loss of any kind can cause problems with the gall bladder. I've heard there is a medication (Actigall?) that can be given post surgery for several months to help prevent gall stones.

I had my gallbladder removed last feb. I dropped 100 pounds in 8 months. No issues now. Gallbladder surgery was way easier. I wish I had mine out with my sleeve surgery since I had a 3500 dollar deductable!

Extreme weight loss leads to gallbladder problems. Hence me I was sleeved on May 16 2014. My gallbladder is long gone. I was on the Optifast program for a year and lost 81 lbs but gained it back, hence why I have my wonderful vsg. I had my gallbladder out

Ask your surgeon to put you on actigall. You take it 1 week post op to prevent any problems but you have to take it for 6 months.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
