Hi all,

I'm new to forums and chat rooms, but getting ready to have this procedure has prompted me to seek out others. I'm almost there, just need my EGD and set up surgery date, looks like it will be in early May 2007. I read several responses to Melissa Dangers posting and felt encouraged already. Glad to know I'm not alone in my struggles with this decision, it's like you guys/girls are in my head - it's comforting to know someone else has walked the walk and talked the talk. I feel pressured from my thin friend who wonders why I couldn't just keep working on the weight loss like I'm doing now (lost 17lbs since Christmas!!) and not go through with this. She really doesn't understand how that I cannot face another big weight loss failure from a "diet" to gain it all back, like I've done for the past 30 years. I'll be sure to share with her some of your sage words of wisdom to help her understand. I too am afraid of the pre-surgery diet and what it is going to take after surgery to succeed, but when you need to lose over 100lbs, I've decided this is the tool I need to have to be successful. Good luck to everyone out there.

Sheila, I was exactly like you. My top weight was 308. I lost 30 lbs on my own to 282 and bamm, couldn't move another inch. That is when I was banded. It is hard to lose weight! I am proud at what this last 10 month has given me. I am down 52 lbs. 2 pant sizes, 3 top sizes and 50 more lbs from goal. I am an average loser at 1 lb a week. The doctor told me you can expect to lose 30-50% of your excess weight the first year. That puts me on track at 50% today. Trust me when I tell you that had I exercised I probably would be down 70-75 lbs right now. I haven't at all. I just started the exercise again. Julie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
