acid reflux

Recommended Posts

Alan- Living with a band that is too tight, regardless of weight loss, is dangerous. You can cause a slip. Please be careful! I recommend an slight unfill. Pneumonia twice in 6 months? That's just crazy. Get an unfill.

Bon-You also should see a doctor ASAP. Severe reflux is no joke. If you can't get to Mexico, get in to see someone else. Even your pimary care doctor.

I have had my band since Dec. 06 and have lost 40 lbs. Unfortunately, in the last month, I have had a lot of nausea and upper esophagus discomfort. My band doctor sent me for a barium esophagram and we discovered I have a "Schatzy's Ring". It is a tight band that forms in you upper esophagus making it hard to swallow. I also have severe GERD which seems to be making everything worse. I will be having a procedure to stretch the ring performed when I have an endoscopy later this week. This has been really tough. Has anyone else had this issue and do you know if it can be band-related?

I am just like the one person said...I had horrible acid reflux before the band. I was taking 2 150mg Zantac a day. Now I have only had it one day and I believe my meds did it to me. I have never had it again. I love the band just for taking the acid reflux away. It was a great benefit along w/ losing the weight.

I have reflux but it seems to occur mostly when I would eat late and go to bed shortly after eating, or when I drank wine. I was eating Tums by the handfuls, I finally talked to my new PCP she didn't seem to know a lot about the lapband, but she did give me Nexium, it's been wonderful. But you all have me worried about a "slipped band" now. What are the symptoms besides reflux?

I have GERD's and I take Protonix every morning. I can not go one day with out it, for I will get acid reflux very bad, as I can barely breathe.

Is it known, if the Lap Band tends to make GERD's worse. I've been told, if I lose some weight, I wouldn't have the GERD's at all.

Hi Patty, The idea is that weight loss does help with GERD, but I don't believe it will get rid of it all together. I have a patient right now, she's 90 and she's had GERD for many years, she's on all kinds of medication for it, and she is not overweight and never was. Sorry.

I was banded in Mexico but do not know who to go to in my area and whether a regular doctor would see me for this. My doctor in Mexico recently was killed so I can't go see him.

Who do you know that may be in NC area and does anyone know any doctors in SE USA that would remove the band if necessary.

Hi Bonnie:

I was Banded in Mexico, and there was a doctor north of Atlanta, named Dr. Ponce, who was always willing to see Mexican patients. I'm sure there are a lot more these days, as that was 2001 back when the Band was first approved.

I don't think where you were Banded should be an issue in terms of removal. It doesn't even seem to be an issue for fills much these days (at least in my experience.) Most surgeons just want your op report (if available), and any recent fluoroscopies, etc.

You can always go to Allergan's doc locator for a list near you. I think if you explain that your surgeon *died*, they might be more willing to take you.

Good luck :o

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
