Well I known a few people with Medicaid said they had to do the 6 month weight lost management program before being approved for surgery. I don't know what state your from but I live in Illinois and I'm with an insurance called County Care which is like medicaid but a little different. When talking with my insurance provider, I asked do I have to do the 6 month weight lost management program and they told me it was up too my Doctor. So I will see what happens. I have my first doctors appointment on June 20th.

I'm in Colorado (Medicaid) and it seems to be a six month thing. Each month you have to weigh in with your doctor and they have to note: current diet, weight, and exercise attempts. Then at the end I guess the Dr. refers you.

There's also (in the 6 month meantime) a psychological approval and some nutrition classes I have to take.

I have no idea if this is easy or hard to get approved, but I've heard good things.

I am in Idaho and I have medicare and Medicaid. The insurance biller at Dr. Valentines office said that yes Medicaid requires a 6 month doctor supervised diet. But in my case because medicare is my primary insurance and only requires a 3 month diet and Medicaid follows their lead. What really surprised me was that the 3 months don't have to be consecutive. I was intending to have a gastric bypass a year ago, but I changed my mind. I went back to the same surgeon this month (sept 2014) and was told since I have already been seen twice on a diet I only need to diet one more month!! I was very, very pleased to hear this to say the least. I have to see the dietician on the 30th and then my surgery will be scheduled!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
