Eating to fast - any suggestions to slow down?

Recommended Posts

Had surgery on May 10 and I'm eating to fast, before sleeve I was always the one to scarf down my food, I have tried to slow down now but i still find my self eating to fast and by the time I get the full feeling I have over eaten -- any suggestions? I bought a baby spoon which has helped wanted to know if anyone else had this problems

I've eaten too fast when I'm busy talking, probably chewing fast and swallowing so I can respond or join in the conversation. I have to put down my fork after every single bite and take 1/2 the size bite I think I should. Every few bites I try and pause for at least a minute to check my fullness gauge. I can no longer multi-task while I eat like I used to, no reading, cleaning, driving, etc.

Download the Eat Slower app - you set it for an amount of time you want between bites and will chime when it's time to take another bit. I originally set mine at one minute - I focused on chewing and set my fork down between bites. This helped me immensely. I event use it occasionally now when I need to get back to basics.

Also, eat meals at the table without distractions (no TV, no reading, no e-mails, etc) - mindful eating. Focus on the food you are consuming - savor it, enjoy it. You are fueling your body - honor that food that will help take care of you.

That's a great idea about the app I will try that at lunch -- sitting at table with no distractions is also good at dinner time I'm always on computer or watching tv so I will try that thanks

Just do it!?

Think as you eat, put that utensil down, measure your food out, breathe!!

I eat to fast too. I need to heed this advice as well.

Sometimes, when I'm on the road for work, I don't have the luxury of a slow, mindful meal. On those days I stick with Protein Shakes. They keep me going until I can go home and eat a proper meal slowly.

I am having a very hard time with this. I worked in the medical field as a nurse tech and we sucked it down and ran. I try so hard but forget and it makes me so miserable.

This might seem a bit weird but I will play candy Crush on my phone sometimes. I take a bite of lunch then play a game. Take a bite, then another game... haha :) I know we aren't supposed to eat with distractions but who am I kidding. I've never eaten in total silence staring at the walls in my entire life. I come from a huge family and we like to chat while watching our DVR and eating dinner. Over the years I eat slow without even thinking about it. But while you're still learning try things like setting your utensil down between bites and just enjoying the company around you or your TV show.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
