So right now I'm post-op, But I've been reading a lot online here and other sources about the onset of acid reflux and GERD after Bariatric surgery. My concern is that my family (on my father's side) has a history of horrible heart burn and GERD, but they also have a history of bad eating habits and smoking/drinking too excess (lots of alcoholics), My grandfather also died of throat cancer and my father followed a year later due to lung cancer. Though I've never suffered any sort of acid reflux or heart burn related issue outside of "once in a great while" if I eat something specific. Is GERD as big of a problem for post-op patients as I hear it is?, or is the Internet just trying to scare me out of getting the sugery?

Do any of you suffer horribly from GERD?

Is it something you had before surgery or is it something that came with it?

I don't know the answer to this, but maybe there's a higher chance with a particular type of bariatric surgery... sounds like something you may want to ask your surgeon.

I plan on asking the surgeon about it when I see him next. From what I've read online it seems to affect band and sleeve patients most. Was just wondering how many people had an issue with this post-op.

I had GERD pre op. My surgeon strongly suggested that I get the bypass instead of the sleeve for this reason. I really didn't want the bypass, so I went ahead with the sleeve. I take Prilosec every day and haven't had any trouble with heart burn.

Hey! I had suffered from severe GERD before surgery. I would wake up in the middle of the night on many occasions, choking on stomach acid. I ALWAYS had heartburn, I didnt really know what it was like to not have heartburn, actually. My mom and dad both suffer from severe reflux so I assumed it was just something i was going to have to live with.

I had the band, and my surgeon repaired a hiatal hernia during surgery, but I have no had any symptoms of heartburn since i had my surgery May 8th. I'm not sure if its because I'm eating healthier food, but all i know is, I'm enjoying not carrying around tums with me everywhere I go.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
