Hi, I live on the southside of Chicago and I'm interested in getting the lap-band. My insurance had it as an exclusion, so I will be going under my husband's insurance beginning in January.

I've only seen one presentation here in Chicago regarding lap-band. Who was your surgeon? Did they help you get approved through insurance?

Any advice would be helpful!:glasses

Thanks!

Dr. Lahmann (silver Cross Hospital, Joliet) does my aftercare. My surgeon is no longer in the area. Most places will help you fight the insurance company. After all that's how they get paid. If they don't help people get approved, they can't do surgery. A great place to start is Welcome to LAP-BAND.com they will send you a list of surgeons in the area. Then you have to call around and see who takes your insurance, go to a seminar, and finally meet with a surgeon. They will do an initial consultation, submit to your insurance for pre-approval. Then you get to wait. If you are denied make sure they will be willing to appeal with/for you. That was one of my first questions before I even made the seminar appointment. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. ~Mandy

I would recommend Dr. Vafa Shayani from Day One Health. My experiences with him have all been wonderful. He is a really caring surgeon and he helped me a lot to get insurance approval and PCP approval (long story if you want to know i can tell you). Here's the information if your interested:

Day One Health

Dr. Vafa Shayani

60 E. Delaware Place (15th Floor)

Chicago, Illinois 60611

(312)-255-1900

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
