Hi all. I'll just start off by saying that I have bipolar disorder. I was doing awesome for months, but recently I had a hypomanic episode which fell into bad depression. I stayed in my bed all weekend and basically stared at the wall or slept. :(

So I saw my psychiatrist and he told me it was malabsorption. He said he's seen this with a lot of his patients who have gastric bypass. The particular medicine that I'm on, latuda, requires 350 calories for it to be absorbed into the body. I decided to have a larger meal in the middle of the day. Now, I need to find something that is 350 calories and healthy. I can't put a bunch of healthy things together because it would be too much to eat.

Anyone have any ideas of some meals that I could have that would be healthy and 350 calories?

Thanks!

How about a Protein drink with some extras mixed in? Peanut Butter, etc. It'll be healthy and give you Protein and should be over 350.

Well, I thought about that. However, my surgeon doesn't want me drinking any Protein drinks, because they are not solid food. And, my psychiatrist told me it should be solid food. A Protein Drink would be so much easier though!

Really? It's funny how doctors differ so much. My doctor wants me to drink Protein drinks. My nutritionist gave me Protein Shake recipes.< /p>

Wow... did he discuss any alternative meds you might can take? I'm bipolar, too and I take Lamictal for it and it doesn't have any restriction like that. I'd say contact your psych and talk to him about alternatives... you're right, it's going to be hard (impossible) to eat 350 calories in one sitting.

Best wishes!

I've been treating my bipolar for 7 years now. I've been on everything under the sun! That's why I had to have the bypass. I may have been 20lbs overweight, but until I started psychiatric drugs I gained soooo much weight. So, latuda is the only thing we have found that works. I talked to the dietician and she said to add a tablespoon of peanut butter! Won't be too filling and add 100 calories. I'll take it. Thanks for the help!

Hi, I'm bi polar as well. I have been on lamictal and sertraline for 7 years. I have had some episodes since having the gastric bypass and I know it's because my meds are not being absorbed the way they use to. My dr said to split up my meds. I use to take them all at night. I take half dosage in the morning and half at night. It seems to help.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
