Only doing pre-op the day before surgery

Recommended Posts

Toofat I did self funded also and went to Dr. Aceves. He's been the president of the Mexico Bariatric society, has performed about 2000 sleeves and is the guy that travels to the US to teach docs here. He does a LOT of revisions on bad sleeves also - it's an art and if not done well the sleeve can expand.

I flew into San Diego and their driver picked me up with another couple also having surgery. The pre op lab work and tests were that day and last supper (anything you want including 2 drinks) was that night. The next day was surgery then I spent 3 days in the hospital. They do 3 leak tests and you even get to take home the pictures of your new stomach. The drive you back to the airport and you had home 4 days after you get there. The whole thing was $8750, (flight cost was the only extra).

If you are considering self pay anyway, you might want to look into getting the best sleeve and care you can. With open you are going to be a much longer recover y time (a month instead of a week).

Ps, I liked into single incision, would have been great! But BMI has to be really low. I have 5 small incisions.

Lylabelle,

My PA did tell me that not everyone is the ideal candidate for the single incision. She told me that what they look for is patients who

Have a body mass index of 40 or less plus 1 or more co-morbities.

Has had no prior abdominal surgery.

Does not have a lot of central obesity. (stomach area)

My BMI is 41 and my weight is all over, I have high Cholesterol, and a bit of incontinence due to weight, which they thing will all correct with the surgery.

Im due for surgery in September... I was told ill be on a liquid diet only 2days prior . I am happy about this because I feared the 2wk prep. Anyone know why certain ppl have to do a longer prep than others? Just curious

For my dr 4 weeks is the minimum. I'm on week #1. so far/so good. one day liquid - cripes! I have 2 weeks!

Jess,

I am not thrilled about having to do 2 weeks of the pro-op liquid diet either but to have the single incision procedure done I much prefer the 2 weeks of liquid over the 5-7 incisions. :)

My surgery is July 8th and I don't have to do any special diet. They told me to eat light the night before surgery. I think that I will try to do a couple of weeks liquid diet before so I have a nice slender liver. Good luck everyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
