Really nervous!

Recommended Posts

Hi, All. I have the lap band placed 2009, 10cc. I had very minimal weight loss even though I was doing everything I was supposed to do. I only lost 23 lbs in the 5 months it was working for me. Having 2 children in that span has not done my body well, especially my last child since I was sick with him for the first half of my pregnancy, seriously vomitting at least once a day until 25 weeks pregnant, then have it return at 9 months pregnant. Since I have had him, I had increased problems with my band and am now in the works of getting the RNY. I am seriously scared out of my mind, the original reason for me to get the lap band was the fact that my intestines would stay right where they were made. My Dr. who I trust completely says it would be best to go with the RNY and not the sleeve. Just looking for some words of incouragement as I know there really is no turning back once I have this done. I am going foward with it as I have started to develop some knee discomforts and would rather not have to have my knees replaced before I become elderly.

Just want to let you know that you are no alone. I had decided on the band because I take anti inflammatory drugs due to horrible arthritis. I won't be able to take them afterwards but I hope the weight loss will help with joint issues and pain. I have had 2 slipped bands (removed) and am now waiting for the bypass which will not happen until August since I had a total hip replacement (scheduled for 6 months) and need time for healing before another surgery.

Remember the reason we did this in the first place, to lose weight and have a better life (joints and all). A friend of mine (who I met through this process) has been through the same (2 slips and bypass) and is doing amazing, never has issues with the bypass (other then stinky poop due to less intestine). We both agree we wish we had just done the bypass back in 2009. Hang in there, we will be better then fine once the healing is done. Just stay away from the empty calories - sugar and fat and white flour, and enjoy life!!! You can do this!

Don't be nervous.. I had the band removed and revised on May 21 and even though I'm only a week out I can already tell a HUGE difference and I mean a wonderful one!! I actually was successful with the band but threw up everyday.. Was constantly sliming. I don't have those issues at all anymore. I feel like a normal person just I am NEVER hungry and I haven't thrown up since day of surgery! I am still on liquids but it's much easier to drink now. I'm down 18 lbs as of yesterday. Still in bed so haven't weighed today lol. Please let me know if you have any questions!! I can tell you this surgery for me was way easier than the band surgery.. Not sure if taking 3/4 bottle of Miralax day before surgery to clean out is the reason but I can say it helped lol no BM issues this time whatsoever! You got this and so happy for you.. I was a big band advocate until now I would Always deter from the lapband now this is soooo much better!!

Hi AuriP! You are not at all alone. I was banded in 2006, I did have success but after I became pregnant, it was a living nightmare. During my pregnancy I was sick, a lot. My band suffered and so did I. My daughter was born in June and I continued to have problems that I just couldn't stand to live with. I did not want bypass, the idea scared the hell out of me. My dr said she wouldn't do the sleeve, did not believe I would have long term success and would suffer with even more reflux etc. I reluctantly agreed to the bypass.

Although excited I was terrified, I have had a lot of surgeries and this is the only one I cried in the O.R contemplating canceling up to the last minute. I didn't, and I'm glad. Like Alli, my surgery was May 21st, and I am happy I did it. Although I said I would not use a scale, I can't stay away from it. I am down 15.6lbs and feel great and am off the pain meds. I have had my one week follow up and everything is healing as expected. Hardest part for me in the first few days home was my baby not understanding why I couldn't pick her up or play on the floor. That too has passed. To be afraid is normal, This is a big decision but I believe it is a good one.

Thanks all. Being that I have 3 children instead of the one when I had the band placed has taken its toll on me as well. My youngest just made 1 this month and I am due to have surgery sometime in July. I am feeling a bit better about this, I'm just ready to take advantage of the quality of life I will have while my children are young. I never had the not hungry feeling with the band, I can't wait for that feeling with the RNY.

Hi, You're definitely not alone. I am scared out of my mind. I'm having band out in 3 weeks. Dr. wants me to do RNY and I know that's what I need b/c my diabetes is getting worse. I almost backed out of my appointed today and I was standing at the window in my Dr's office...LOL. If my insurance won't pay to have RNY in a few months after band removal, I suppose I will be having it done in one surgery..Keep me posted and good luck.

Hi AuriP, Although still a little nervous as you, I had the band removed nearly 2 weeks ago. I'm doing OK and now looking forward to having RNY around 2-3 months from now. I hope your nervousness has gotten better. I know in the next 2-3 months, I will be hoping that someone says this to me..LOL....Good luck with the rest of your journey!

Update. They have finally put my stuff into insurance. Waiting on the call that I'm approved. If I am, I'm hoping for 9/30 or 10/1-10/2 date. I'm feeling better about the RNY just nervous about surgery now. So waiting to be done as even without a fill I sometimes get stuck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
