Hello everyone,

Although I posted this post on the general forum, I wanted to post it here as well just in case you all don't see it elsewhere.

______________________________________________________________

I read so many stories about the 2 week pre-op liquid diet and I was so scared and nervous and didn't think I'd make it. I kept thinking, how in the hell these NUTs and surgeons expect us to eat basically nothing for 2 whole weeks.

To the members who've yet to experience this well talked about "2 week liquid Protein diet", let me tell you my experience and hopefully it will ease your mind and give you hope. So I started my Protein diet on Monday 6/16 here it is Friday and I'm fine. I must say, it's not as bad as you all think it's going to be. I don't know if it's the types of protein I'm taking but I really really haven't been hungry. Not even head hunger. Mind you I have a 14 year old son I have to either cook or heat up food for every day.

I'm allowed 4-8oz Protein shakes a day, sugar free Jello & pudding, 1 -8oz of low carb yogurt, 1-8oz of skim milk, sugar free popsicles and unlimited amounts of non-sugary, non-carbonated, non-caffeinated beverages and broth.

I've been having 2-3 shakes and one serving of yogurt at night as dinner and twice I've had a cup of broth and twice I've had a cup of sf Jello. I haven't had any headaches/migraines or anything. I have not cheated at all not a bite, a crumb or a lick of anything. Based on the stories I've read, I've come to the conclusion that it must be the type of Protein Shakes that are satisfying me and not allowing me to feel hungry.

Just like everyone else, the anticipation and the unknown had me failing at the protein diet before I even began. I have to tell you though, the two times I felt weak was when I over did it at the gym and yesterday when I went too long (about 9 hours) without a shake. Other than those two times I was/am good. I just bought my son some McDonalds and I didn't even take a french fry. I used to always have at least two of his fries. I'm working at home today and you couldn't tell me I wasn't going to be home all day and not eat something I wasn't supposed to. Nope not at all. I had one Protein Shake and two sf popsicles.

So I'm saying all this to say, please don't stress over this 2 week protein diet. It may or may not be as bad as you think. I wanted to post this because I wish I read something like this before I started because I might not have stressed it as much as I did. Good luck to those of you who will be on the diet soon. I am so sorry this is so long but I needed to post my experience in its entirety.

I would just like to point out that everyone failed to tell me one of the worst parts about the liquid diet besides the hunger is the numerous times I've had to pee! Uncomfortable...so much for trying to sleep thru these 10 days lol

lmbo. In my opinion, that's the best part of this phase. All this week, I must have gotten up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom about 10-15 times. liquid in is liquid out. That is why we are losing so much so fast. We are not putting in fats, carbs, sugars etc. and flushing out alot of liquids and junk.

It's a good thing. Imagine if our bodies held on to all the liquid we've been putting into our body. That's why one of the requirements of any weight loss program is to drink lots and lots of Water.

It will all be over soon.

Oh wow. Good for you Mr.Bobb. Tell me, do you feel like you're missing out on this wonderful opportunity? Aren't you curious as to what all the talk is about regarding this Liquid Protein diet? lol

You know you can try it on your own. Hey, what can I say, misery loves company. lol

It is amazing how each surgeon have different requirements for different people.

Hi June 30 buddies! My pre-op diet is one week so I start Monday. 3 shakes a day and unlimited non-starchy vegetables until 3 days before surgery, when it's just shakes. My biggest worry is the potential for a Migraine b/c I can't take my regular migraine med anymore (causes gastritis) and Tylenol isn't effective for me.

Hi June 30 buddies, Hope everyone is doing well! I'm getting very excited. Will complete the 2 week portion. Of my 1200 calorie diet. Everything went well--except for an arthritis flair up from eating the bread and yogurt on the diet. Once I changed the diet to eliminate those things--all is well.

I've lost another 15 lbs! Stopped taking medications per surgeon's instructions and ready to start my liquid diet on Monday.

Anyone else having arthritis issues? Have others had to stop taking meds before surgery?

Denise, congrats! I found the 2 weeks pre-op high Protein, low carb/low fat diet much harder than the liquid diet. Trying to preare that food and stay within the limits of the 3 parts was very difficult. The liquid diet is easy compared to that. On June 22 I will be done 3 weeks of pre op diet so far. Today I am 18.8 lbs down. :D Next week I am on Clear liquids. Still Protein but a non-dairy protein. No milk or any dairy. Hoping to lose 20 lbs before surgery which seems totally attainable!

Congrats to everyone for sticking with it. Mr Robb, weird that you don't have any pre op diet but lucky you. Hope its not hard after to make the sudden change!

Like Denise says, we are in the single digits now - just 9 days left! :):P:D:lol:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
