Hello, newbie here! Just called insurance today and was told I need the 6 month diet, and psych eval. My BMI is just above 40 so I am unsure if I should even try to lose weight for the 6 months. Not sure what to be expecting but excited to have a goal and to have started. My hubby will also be going through the process. We live in Florida and have UHC Choice Plus Insurance. Hi everyone!

I really hope I don't have to do a 6 month diet!! If dieting worked for me I wouldn't need this procedure. :-)

I finally broke down and called insurance for clarification. The answers were all good. Seems the three month versus 6 month program Aetna had is based on patient and doctor consensus. Of course I like the 3 month but the 6 gives me a chance to increase funds in my medical reimbursement account.

I also told a few people I was exploring wls..support from all.

I know right drijc? It's annoying to me that I need to "diet" when it has never worked, and I have been reading that some doctors have also told patients not to lose weight during that time just so that they will be sure to be accepted. Gotta love the insurance companies!

I also find it strange how there is so much variance. I read that someone else only had to attend a 90 minute orientation and no pre-op weight loss.

I will update tomorrow's outcome.

I think for sure every insurance is different just don't get why the whole 6month deal..cuz really if anyone was great at losing the weight we wouldn't be seeking help by surgery...

I agree! I'm just getting nervous now. After the phone call it seemed everything was good and as long as I did xyz I was set. Now, not so sure but still hopeful. Hubby is good because he has diabetes (not that that should be a good thing!) But he definitely will be fine....I'm jealous!

I agree as well.

It actually makes me a bit angry that they want you to be so heavy or have other health issues for approval. I mean I want to be as healthy as possible to help me with my recovery.

I am just glad to read so many success stories!!

Hi Everyone! I am a newbie in the process too. I have already completed my information seminar and two nutrition classes, but still have my psych eval (in two weeks), final nutrition class (next week), EGD and meeting with surgeon before the surgery. I am so ready to see this process through to the end. I am hoping to have my surgery in September if all goes well and everything is approved. Lets keep each other encouraged! All the best, E.

Hi all.

My surgery is on the 18th!! I'm excited, nervous, and anxious all together! I'm 34 years old and

Have always been up and down. It's so hard to explain to those that have been skinny their whole life why I need this surgery to save my life.

I started liquid yesterday. Just getting ready. Had egg drop Soup tonight...hope that is ok!

Good luck to all!

Trebor

I am waaaay behind you but I feel your excitement. I agree it's hard for many to understand but that is human nature I believe. The whole " I did it so why can't you. " attitude is seen in many avenues of life. I know I am guilty of it in other aspects.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
