Talk to me about spicy food (newbie, very early stages of process)

Recommended Posts

So I just started the wls process. met with pcp who recommended me for wls. I still have months to go before a surgery date. These months will be filled with research on a to z of the wls world.

I love spicy food. how do bodies handle spicy food after surgery? is it still possible? looking forward to your stories. Thanks!!!

On occasion I eat spicy and have had no problem.

I would say that you should wait until you are on solids before attempting to eat it. So that means a few months after surgery.

Good luck with the surgery you choose.

For me, it really depends on the spice. When I was at week 3 and could eat purees, I was eating a mix of refried Beans, puree turkey hamburger, cheese and taco bell taco seasoning. I had no problems until I added the Taco Bell taco sauce, Frankensleeve would go into knots and it felt like rocks being ground up in a garbage disposal. I had no problems with Pace or Old Elpaso salsa.

I'm in month 17 post-op and can still feel my stomach lurch whenever I give Taco Bell taco sauce another try, but I stir cayenne and crushed red pepper into most of my meals with no problem. It wasn't until about the 6 month mark that I could tolerate cayenne or crushed red pepper.

@@Rovobay I started adding in things like hot sauce and Sriracha as soon as I moved on to purees (4 weeks out for me). One of my very first pureed meals was thai spice tuna pureed with sriracha sauce. Another was refried Beans doused in chipotle hot sauce. No problems whatsoever. Love my spicy food and it doesn't bother me a bit.

I'm 6 months out - until recently, I have not been able to tolerate really spicy foods, it just hasn't felt good in my tummy. The past couple of weeks, I have ventured out a little more and found that I can add some heat to my food and I'm doing OK with it. I have found with most foods that disagree with me or don't feel great in my tummy one day are OK later. It's trial and error.

I eat spicy food all the time. In the early stages I ate spicy hummus with no problem. Later I went on to adding chopped jalapeños or spicy salsa to things like eggs, fish, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and spaghetti squash. Spicy foods never bothered me. In fact, when nothing tasted 'right' the first month or two following surgery, the intense spicy flavors were the only things that tasted normal. And w/spicy things a little goes a long way, which was good because I could only eat very little of any one thing.

Everyone is different. I tolerated spicy things just fine, you may or may not. It's hard to say. Just follow your docs instructions, eat slowly, take very small bites, and chew, chew, chew. :-)

I've been eating spicy food since I was a week out, when they put me on purees. I would mix in a packet of Taco Bell fire sauce with my refried Beans. Since then I've gone on to eat a ton of really, really spicy things. I think it just depends on your stomach. I have a stomach of Iron so I can tolerate pretty much everything.

I love, love, love spicy food but it no longer loves me. Ever since my sleeve I've had horrible reflux and I can't handle anything too spicy. I do still try to eat it from time to time but I have to take protonix 2 times per day. It's just easier if I stay away from spicy food. Good luck to you, everyone is different.

Maybe I missed it somewhere but it doesn't say what surgery you're having? I have a LapBand and I can eat spicy foods no problem! It sounds like other types of weight loss surgeries make your stomach more sensitive to certain foods. I haven't noticed any food intolerances that I didn't already have before surgery.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey to weight loss surgery and beyond! :)

If you want to read more about how my experience with the LapBand is going, I chronicled everything in my blog from early on in the process of getting approved to now. The link is below in my signature.

@ I am not sure which route I am going, but from my own personal view and from the info I have read, I think I would prefer the sleeve. Thanks for your link, I look forward to reading your blog!

I have always loved well seasoned and spicy foods. I had surgery march 24th and I find I like minimal spices now. Just basics, but not bland. It's different when you have to chew chew chew your food. Idk how long id like to chew chew chew a jalapeño you know? Lol. To answer your question though, I do fine tolerating spicy food, it was just better when I inhaled my food pre op. You may find your taste buds changing anyway. A lot of my pre op favorites repulse me now, even the smells.

This was a huge concern for me also. I am 7 weeks out and have had no problem with spice. I eat red or green chile on everything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
