Back pain after major loss

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

I am almost six months out and almost 100lbs down.

I exercise and eat all my Protein and Vitamins and get all my Water in. I have developed new back pain and am wondering if it is something related to the weight loss. It's mid-back jut under the shoulder blades/bra band area. It's worse after I stand a lot or exercise (running, walking, Zumba and even Yoga). I feel like my posture is pretty bad as well (I tend to hunch forward).

Are my muscles out of whack from supporting all that weight for so many years? Do I need a chiropractor or a physical therapist?

I am sure more core work and strengthening my abs will help...but do I need more than that? I've never had back pain before! What does it start AFTER the weight loss?

I am also starting to wonder if my boobs hanging low (but still large and heavy) is a part of it. I have some great bras but still...

Any help much appreciated!

Hello there I have the same problem. I asked the bariatric dr. about this and she says it's because of weight loss. She said when we are over weight the weight holds us up better and then when we lose weight we tend to slouch forward. She said it's very common and she said to try to pay attention to our posture and sit and stand straight. It's easier said then done though. I hope it gets better for the both of us.

I have that same issue. New back pain after loss. Glad to hear there's really a reason for it.

I have the same pain under my right shoulder blade and sometimes towards my right shoulder. I contributed it to weight lifting, but maybe not...

I'll focus a little more on posture and see if that helps.

That makes sense, but as you say easier said than done. I wonder if a physical therapist could give appropriate exercises or techniques to strengthen posture. I really thought yoga would help but I go 2-3 times a week and it doesn't seem to be. I am not sure just telling myself to "stand up straight" is enough.

I think it depends on which poses you're doing in yoga, and what type of yoga. Different disciplines focus on different areas of the body. You may need some poses targeted to your weak areas. (I can't wait to get cleared for yoga again. I miss it terribly) A physical therapist should be able to give some exercises that will help as well :)

I've had back pain most of my life, and use yoga to control it.

I figure yoga that strengthens the core will help the back, yes? And keeping that relaxed posture with the shoulders not hunched up by the ears...and the ones that elongate the spine? Any other tips? I go for my six month follow up in a week and a half. I am going to ask my surgeon about a physical therapy referral. I need a doctor's orders for it.Anyone use a physical therapist for this with success? Or choropractics?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
