Did anyone get in all of their fluids and protein the first week?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. This is my third day after the sleeve and my second day home from the hospital. I was sleeved on Friday and I came home yesterday afternoon. I have been up today for about five hours, and I have only consumed 18 ounces of liquid, Including A few ounces of Premier Protein shake and a few ounces of Kefir. Can ANYONE get to their goals at first (64 oz liquid, 60 g Protein for me)??

I also wanted to mention that I've never tried kefir before but it tastes good and is sitting really well in my tummy.

Sorry if this question is repetitive. my brain seems to be working very slowly these days LOL

I don't think I know anybody that has gotten in all their fluids or Protein the first two weeks. Thank God they pump you full of fluids in the hospital. Just do the best you can and as time goes by it will get easier and your Fluid intake will increase. Don't stress over this. You are entitled to a healing period.

Not even close to my minimums. I don't think I've heard of anyone getting their mins down immediately after surgery. You just need to do what you can.

I set an alarm on my phone to chime every 5 minutes - that reminded me to sip Water. I don't think I could finish a thinned shake for 10 days or so.

I had to switch from plain Water to Vitamin Water Zero and Propel Zero - that went down easier than plain water. (I'm 6 months out and can just now stomach plain water - prior to this week, it felt gritty for some reason).

I agree nobody seems to be able to hit those goals in the first few weeks. My doctor said to have Water in one hand and a Protein shake in the other and sip back and forth between them for the first 10 days. Realistically, you can't have both hands full of beverages all the time, but in theory it is a good idea.

Other words of advice from someone who is one year post surgery.... don't over do it activity-wise. Give your body a chance to heal this was major surgery and it isn't a race to see how fast you can lose weight. Making the lifestyle changes is going to serve you best in the long run!

I was off work for 8 weeks and it took me a full 4 weeks to find a balance between Water, calories and grams of Protein that worked for me. I had a bout of vertigo at week 3 that was scary, but got resolved when I upped my calorie count to at least 850 per day.

I lost 2 pounds per week for most of the year.... except for the dreaded stall that seems to hit everyone between weeks 2 - 4. When it happens to you just keep doing what the doctor has told you to do. Your body will get past the stall in a few days or a week and then the long term weight loss process will begin!

Good luck to you!

I'm on post op day 4. So far the most I have taken in was yesterday. 10 oz Water 11 oz protien shake. Today I am about 12-13oz water and 2 oz shake so far. No where near where I am supposed to be but I figure as long as I am increasing daily I should be happy.

18 ounces in 5 hours is pretty good. In 15 hours that would be 54 ounces. The biggest complication after surgery is dehydration. Do what you can. I am 5 days post op and have no problems with my Fluid or Protein intake.

.

One of the signs I know of dehydration is a dark yellow urine color. It should be clear/really pale in color for healthy urine. As long as your urine is good, do what you can. Everybody is different. Also way to go janeyb :) glad you can get it in.

I am one month out and I am fortunate enough to be able to gulp Water. Even still I have only come close to 64oz of water alone, a few times. I feel like I am always putting something in my mouth constantly.

My surgery was 4/23 and I can finally gulp water! Maybe three good gulps at a time . For me though, my Water has to be ice cold. I hated ice before surgery and now without it, water makes me nauseous.

I try and get 40oz at work and the rest at home plus 20oz of Protein Drink for Breakfast.

Here's the thing, for the first few weeks, just do your best. It's so hard to drink or take pills or sleep. You just have to do what you can do and hang in there.

Good luck!

Well it may be easier for me to get the fluids in because I am still on all fluids. I am practicing the waiting to drink thing and it could complicate matters. :)

You know, I just realized that 16 oz Water and 11 oz protien shake is really great for me! I've never been much of a drinker (liquids) before surgery I drank maybe 10 oz on a good day. Why should I expect things to change after surgery to make my stomach smaller?

I'm two weeks post op and managed to get in all of my liquids and Protein after about 4 days post op, my drinking is still the same, although I don't purposely attempt, I am able to "gulp" Water the same as before. My doc uses a size 40 bouje "I think that's what it's called" he said that anything smaller was causing more problems and wasn't as successful for patients, maybe this has something to do with it all. I use premiere shakes which is 30g protein in one shake, I'm only able to consume about half a cup of soft food at a time, some days I can't even get that down, but I never have a problem with drinking.

I also was able to get all my Protein and liquids in by about day 4 post op. I also used a 5min timer on my phone in the beginning to keep reminding me to drink. It felt like a full time job at times. I tried to drink things that had alot of Protein for the amount of liquid, like the premier shakes at 30gm and 8oz cup of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth Soup for 21gms. If you make the Soup with milk instead of Water, you have almost 60gms from just that soup and the premier shake. From about 10 days on i could gulp Water same as pre op, so that certainly has made drinking easier and quicker.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
