So after 10 years if being morbidly obese. And on failed to have surgery (may ins company discovered a clause that didn't allow for weight lose surgery 3 years ago) I'm finally taking the plunge again. I currently weigh 301 lbs. I started the journey mid April, at my top weight of 312 lbs. I'm down 11 of the 32 lbs the surgeon would like me to lose prior to surgery. All my preppy test (scope, barium, and psych exam) are all done and only have 4 more dietician visits to do. Any advice for someone starting out this journey?

I had gastric bypass surgery on May 19th. I'm sure you know just to get to the surgery is very long and stressful at times. One of the suggestions I would recommend is when you do start your pre op diet, make sure you stick to it. Otherwise you could be turned away on surgery day. I would recommend setting goals for yourself as well. When you are in the hospital you really really really need to walk after your surgery. It's the fastest way to heal. I'm 6 days out and I'm at the pool and going to a concert. I walk multiple times a day. You will recovery so much faster. I also wouldn't stock up on Protein Shakes because sometimes your taste buds change after surgery. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Good luck in your new life!

Thanks Jodie!

I'm on the 1800 calorie diet now and have quit smoking. How long were you in the hospital for after the surgery? I've never had general anesthesia before and that's freaking me out a little. And if course the waiting. How did you get through the time!

I was in the hospital for 2 nights. Anesthesia is awful for me. I have had it two times and I get sick on it. I feel very fatigue and get motion sick. They will ask you in the hospital if you have ever had it. They will give you medicine and I got a patch too because it's awful for me. It goes away for me within around 24hrs or so. Everyone is different. Some people it doesn't bother. I know the waiting part is hard and anxious. The first day isn't fun but it gets better each day. Like I said, I had mine on Monday and the 5th day out I was at a race and today I'm at a concert. You will do just fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
