Caloric and protein intake

Recommended Posts

Am 5 weeks out an I know that I am to aim for 500 calories and 60-70 Protein a day, but I am only getting 300 calories and about 30-40 protein a day.... Any advice? I am only eating the suggested 3 meals a day, but for the sake of recommended daily allowances I was thinking of having a 4th meal. Good idea or not?

You could add a Protein shake as a snack or a last meal of the day. I think as long as you're still getting most of your calories from regular food, getting some extra Protein from a shake is nothing to look down on (I have the impression the vast majority of us use them for a while after surgery, some people even into maintenance).

You're fine. I'm 6 months out and I only get in about 600 on a good day.

My surgeon and nutritionist recommends at least 4 small meals a day. So, I do a shake for breakfast, then 3 small high-protein meals each day.

I would have been way under my goals that early out with just 3 meals a day. I would for sure add in some Protein shakes.

My nutritionist said it isn't grazing if it is planned & tracked. I have Snacks scheduled throughout the day - it keeps me on track.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
