Getting so frustrated... starting to become depressed

Recommended Posts

I have bipolar disorder, and it's been under control for quite a few months now. However, I have been stalled out on my weightless for a couple of weeks and it's really starting to get to me. My dietician told me it was probably because of how hard I exercise, but for me, I should see results. When I go running everyday and workout really hard, my body should be cooperating. I just feel like I have done so much, and am seeing so little in return.

Sorry if I am bringing anyone down. I just needed to vent this.

I have no idea what your calorie intake is compared to what you are burning through hard exercise, but don't forget that weight loss can be slow in this case for one of two reasons, or a combination of both.

1: You are building muscle and that weighs heavier than fat.

2: Your body is holding on to all it's reserves because your calorie intake is too low.

Have your thyroid checked. That plays a huge part in how much weight we lose. I should know, I have hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed close to 10 years ago now. I thought I was going mad; I'd eat next to nothing and gain. The right meds and WLS helped big time.

Try not to get down (easy to say, I know). Always remember that the body has to give up it's weight eventually if we are completely compliant.

Xx

It is quite common to have stalls during the weight loss process. I encountered one at the half way mark.

Wow, Marathongirl - you've lost so much weight in a very short time! I had my surgery Feb 24th and I've "only" lost 50 lbs so far - but I'm delighted - I have never consistently lost 3-4 lbs per week before. I too am in a stall - still eating correctly (protein first, veg or fruit next, carbs rarely), the correct amount (no more than ¾ - 1 cup) etc etc but I've been stuck for 10 days now. I know from reading these threads that it is a common (maybe universal) problem, so I'm just resigned to it. I exercise about 20-30 minutes a day (walking or swimming) so not as much as you. I use My Fitness Pal to record everything and it keeps sending me messages that I'm not eating enough - so I think my body has gone into "starvation mode" - like Snow Daisy said - saving all the calories it can get. Think positive - maybe your expectations are too high - I was told it would take about a year to lose 130 lbs. Good luck and keep in touch - this too shall pass : )

You are doing wonderful in losing weight.

You should be giving yourself a lot of credit for how far you have come.

In losing weight your meds might need adjusting for your bipolar. I would check on that if you are having trouble with your mood.

I know for my depression I had to have my meds adjusted because of the weight lose.

I also agree that you might not be taking in enough calories because of all the exercising.

Take to your nutritionist or surgeons office about adjustments to your plan.

Remember you've come a great distance in a short time in losing and maybe your body is just saying let me have a breather and I'll start working again in dropping the weight.

Take care.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
