Success in those with lifelong struggle?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Something I wonder about is whether there is any difference in success rates for those of us (like me) who have struggled with food and weight since childhood vs those who weren't overweight until well into adulthood.

I've had major fluctuations over the years but I haven't been a "normal" weight since I was 8 or 9. I'm 46 now. It's hard for me to imagine that ever happening! Although I really want to believe it could.

If anyone has stats is love hear - or just to hear from people like me who did achieve success with the sleeve.

Thanks! I am so loving this forum these days as my surgery date approaches.

I wonder the same thing. I was not overweight until age 50. Before that weighed 125-135 lbs. now at 212 lbs I am miserable. Concerned about my chances of success but am heading to Surgery June 12 th. I am so excited to think that I might actually lose this weight.

I'm one of those people too. I've struggled my whole life with my weight. I was scared I wouldn't be successful or would be hungry all the time and miserable.

I was sleeved 4/1/14, including my 2 week pre-op diet I'm down 56lbs.

I no longer have food on my mind all the time, in fact, I often have to set myself alarms to remind myself it's time to eat so I'm meeting my Protein goals.

I don't have those uncontrollable urges anymore either. Used to be that were there a cupcake or donut around I would be first in line in my office (fyi there are ALWAYS cupcakes and donuts in my office) but now I don't even have the urge anymore.

This has been the best decision I've ever made and would recommend it to anyone/everyone struggling without reservation or hesitation.

Good luck to you!

I'm about to reach 18 months post-op and I've lost 154 lbs as of today. I have been overweight since grade school and was sleeved at 47. I was worried that the surgery would be another empty promise like all the other "miracle" weight loss products I saw on TV.

My entire mental attitude changed right after surgery. No more food cravings or the compulsion to eat certain flavors. I assume it was because of the reduction in ghrelin production. My biggest battle has been not letting myself get back into the habit of eating when bored. I've never truly felt hunger since surgery. My stomach growls, but I don't have that mental need to eat.

I've stalled out on my weight loss several times, but as long as I go back to eating correctly, the weight starts coming off again.

I work with several ladies that have had the Gastric Bypass - 1yr, 4yrs, and 10yrs. since surgery. They are all happy with their weight loss and have maintained it.

This is a great question, and I'd love to hear from some veterans. I'm also someone who has been overweight since grade school (quite petite until we moved states when I was 6, then I was bored and lonely and gained a lot of weight I've been dealing with since). I haven't yo-yo-ed too much, since I know it's bad for you, so I've only really lost any weight twice, and of course gained it back. But I was never the sort to lose 50, gain 60 over and over again. I'd love to hear if anyone know how weight history affects sleeve success.

It will change your life. I wish I could have back all the money I spent on pills, shakes, programs, etc. This is the only thing that worked.

I know some people thought my start weight was not "that bad" but it used to require non-stop vigilance to maintain a 14. Now I'm smiling in a size 6, on my way to a 4. It's still work, but you actually get RESULTS so the work doesn't feel pointless.

My husband was also not huge but had struggled so much with weight since childhood. Now he's almost to a healthy bmi. We are saving a lot in food budget, lol.

I am also told " you are not that big". I would be a lot bigger if I didn't try to make healthy choices every day. I would not be carrying this weight if I could have dieted it off. Believe me I tried. I , like you have spent a fortune on Nutrisystem, HCG, Jenny Graig and anything else I could find. I can't believe that I might have finally found a solution!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
