vitamin D & iron deficiency

Recommended Posts

I had both, It was not hard at all to maintain after surgery and as I lost the weight, my Vitamin D leveled out. My Iron took a little longer, but I was always Iron deficeint. I always take a Multivitamin and get my bloodwork monitored every 3 ,months.

I was D deficient, but my nutritionist told me unless you live in a very sunny place like Florida and you're outside a lot, you're probably D deficient. She has me taking BioTech 50,000IU capsules once per week. One of the best affects of taking that so far has been that it really pumps up your mood! Noticeable difference between before I started and now. Even my boyfriend, who was on antidepressants for years, was able to stay off them as long as he was taking his Vitamin D every week with me. :)

Thank you both for your response so it didn't affect them letting you have surgery with it low? & 50,000 of Vitamin D sounds scary is there such a thing as to much Vitamins?

No, didnt' effect surgery at all. They tell you that much to build you up. Vitamin D takes time to store, once your level goes up, you'll be taking less. Ask them specifically what kind D or D3. Just so you are getting exactly what you need.

It amazes me how many things Vitamin D effects. Google it when you get a chance. Good luck!

I've been Iron deficient most of the time since I've been sleeved. It's really annoying because I have to take Iron and it constipates me severely.

My vid d was very low too, and like the other poster said, I started taking 50,000

a week, and it came right up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
